22R to 22RE fuel injection question's

I'm going to be swapping to EFI by taking the intake, etc of of an 85 motor and bolting it up to my 84 head, which is predrilled.

1)Will the carb cam work for awhile,or do I need to put a EFI cam in right away?

2)Since I'm using a 32 gal tank from a blazer,Should I run some sort of in tank fuel pump,or can I just run a external electric pump mounted by the fuel tank?

3)What fuel pressure does a 22RE need to run?

4)Where is the antiknock sensor at and I think I read
somewhere that I need to modify my block to accept this?

5)What's the difference between a carbed 84 head and 85 EFI head beside's the combustion chamber?
Will there be a power loss with what i'm going to do or will I gain from it.
Iwas just going to swap the whole motor and drop it in,but it smoke's alittle and has 237,000 mile's on it,where my engine has been rebuilt and under 30,000.Thank's:Help:

I am sure you cam will work...maybe not as good, but it will work.
When I swaped over I hooked up an external pump. It's workin' great. the auto one part # is E2000. it's rated at 90 psi I think.

I don't understand why you would but a engine in with 200k+ miles for one with a fresh rebuilt. just change the instake and you will be fine.

Whatever is easier.

27-31psi

It is between the oil filter and the back of the block. Modifying the block would be a real PITA. If you don't have the hole... the wire will just reach the top rear motor mount hole. I welded a nut to the head of a motor mount bolt and screwed it in there. It probably doesn't work as good as it should but it doesn't ping much anyway.

It depends. '84-85 is when they changed from open-chamber to closed-chamber and I don't know exactly when the change happened. As long as your '84 head has all the right holes on the intake side (21 of them) you should be good.

I am in the same boat on my 82 pickup weather to get the weber carb working on it or to swap in EFI.
I think my motor is a 83 though.

I'm currently running the weber a 32/36.work's pretty well other than extreme angle's.
Since I've got the chance to swap to EFI,i'm going to do the swap.
I started on it tonight for about an hour.I'll get it done by the end of the week,at least all bolted up,vac line's and such.My main concern is going to be a fuel pump,02 sensor.

I would get an in-line universal fuel pump that is rated for somewhere over 27 PSI. A higher pressure pump shouldn't cause you any problems the extra fuel will just go back into the tank through the return lines. A friend of mine is running a 95 PSI pump in his Samurai with a fuel injected 1.6 liter and no problems at all.

Actually its 32-38psi for the EFI fuel pump.

For the heads be carefull because some EFI heads are about 1/8 thicker and the timming chain won`t fit...

What's up you crazy Canuck! I got 27-31 right from the FSM, that's the running pressure. The head is thicker? The block is taller on '85 and up engines, never heard the head was thicker??

Have you done anything to the 4Runner since I saw you? The only thing I've done to mine is wrinkle more metal.:D

Sorry I always get confused with your sig, you were with the blue Runner or 94 Taco?

I guess we don`t have the same manual!! mine says exactly what I wrote :wow:

As for the thicker head; I once tried to fit an 22RE EFI head on a carb block and I couldn`t fit the timming chain on. I measured the heads and the EFI one was 1/8 taller!

The only mods I did since Paragon was to lenghten the wires for the fuse box and re-locate it for easy diagnostics. I`m fighting very hard to keep the frame from crumbling too! I also broke my welded diff/gears and I had to replace those in the field

Right now I`m fabricating a new can-back from a military top that I was given...

I`ve already have my money saved up for the next Jamboree!

The guy in the cap is Eric, his rig is SAS'ed now, wheeled with him a few weeks ago. Rausch is only about 40 south of Paragon. He's famous now. :kidding: http://marlincrawler.com/sas.html

i have a rebuilt 22r with EFI and have all vac lines hooked up and wireing and a new fuel pump and it still will not start, it turns over fine with spark but no fuel in lines to EFI. it would be nice to get that done after spending $600 in engine parts and a full rebuild.:Help:
