does anybody know if a cab from a 2 wheel drive 84 will bolt onto an 82 frame? if not what has to be done to make it fit?

Yes it will fit with some very minor modifications. I put an 84 2WD std cab & short bed on my 83 4WD std cab/longbed frame.

The 2 front body mounts are about 2" farther apart on the 84, so you'll need to fab some spacers. The front in-cab mounts are close enough that you can drill new holes up through the cab, and the on the rear mounts you just need to egg out the holes in the cab. You'll also need to cut a hole in the floor for the t-case shifter. The 2WD dash panel even has the 4WD indicator, just add a bulb and wire it up.
