i installed a pacesetter on my 94 22re and it makes kinda a chirping or pinging sound when i accelerate and when i downshift to slow down. is this something that headers do? i dont think the header is leaking theres no carbon traces anywhere and its been on for a couple months now. when i drove it right after it was on i just assumed that was normal but its pretty loud.

there is a chance you have a small exaust leak someware, perhaps one that really only comes about when the engine shifts position slightly in acceration or what not.
Also im not certin but ive heard storys about similar noises comming from opening up the exaust too wide.
I would check all the seals end to end. If you cant find the problem tho It might be good if you took it into a local muffler shop and picked their brains, you might be able to find someone to evaluate it for pretty cheap.

I have an old 4 in to 1 header on my 86 that I took off of an old Celica whth a 22RE. When I first put it on everything was all good then after about a week of hard driving it started making a sound like I had a big exhaust leak and I started it and tried to figure out where the sound was coming from and it was leaking on all 4 cyls but from the bottom side of the head where the header bolted up. I just double-gasketed it and the leak stopped. I am not saying that you are having the same problem but you might want to try it. Just use 2 Toyota 22RE exhaust gaskets, but you need to remove the #2 and #3 sparkplug heat shield on one of the gaskets or else they will not sit flush with eachother when you have them doubled up. Is it a try-y design? Headers definantly sound way different than a stock manifold. My truck sounds like a Suburu WRX when I am in a decel when it gets down to 4,000 rpm, it's pretty cool actually but the cops don't like it:) If it has always made the noise and everything runs good, than I would say that it is all good. I would look for hard to find exhaust leaks. I am not familiar with pacesetter headers but I know that 94's have air injection. Was the header that you installed made for your particular application?

yeah the headers made for my year and everything, ill look for leaks but its quiet under the hood when its idling, no exhaust sound at all. maybe thats just the way its supposed to sound, i dont know

your leak is probally the bottom of the back port or in the back of the 4:1 section. to check the ports take a peice of air hose tape it to a peice of gas welding rod on one end so you can reach up in the engine bay from the ground. rub one end of the hose around the ports, put the other in your ear when you feel a little wind you have found you leak. Most headers settle after about a week and you have to retorque them. When I work at the exhaust shop we always setup follow on appointments for that reason.

I have a header on my 4runner and it makes the same sound you are describing. The header tubes are thinner than the cast manifold and what i think you are hearing is the combustion noise through the pipe. For example when i lug the motor down, and there is not a lot of exhaust noise i can hear a tinny sound coming from the exhaust header. An exhaust leak will sound like a loud tick or if you have more than 1 it may sound like a whistle coming out from under the hood. Hope this helps but i don't think you have anything to worry about

yeah, the tinny sound, i was looking for the word for it. i think ill retorque them and live with the sound. i couldnt afford anything better and my downpipe was cracked wide open. i dont mind it really

i finally got around to retorquing the header bolts cause they were making a lot of sound lately, and all of them were very loose. i tightened them and it sounds better, more like when i first put the header on.

Toyota gaskets seem to seal the best
