it looked like this...42" TSL 's and a Dana 60 front 4.56 Detroit
V-6 Toyota rear with a spool and coil springs with a 4 -link.. :redspotda

snohman
08-28-2005, 10:15 PM
then this in one easy maneuver at Fordyce creek..A very slow roll over when
i took a bad angle..oh shit..

snohman
08-28-2005, 10:17 PM
not very pretty..

snohman
08-28-2005, 10:20 PM
ouch...it still hurts

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:24 PM
well...as you can see it pretty much wasted the cab and fender and hood..
I am the original owner since oct 83 and wanted to retain the Toyota truck
look so i decided to find a cab and cut from the floorboard around the back and up to the window posts.I have a friend who has done several Toyota
truck cab repairs and has done some amazing work...you cant' even tell where the cab was cut..the donor truck was a blue 81 toyota

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:27 PM
since my old exo did'nt fare too well i decided to go full exo with .120 wall
tubing when the unexpected happens.

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:34 PM
it took about 3 months of working on the weekends and about 200 ft of tubing to complete..I painted the interior the same color and sprayed the
headliner area with a bedliner coating.

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:41 PM
here's a few pics of the progress

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:42 PM
a few more shots

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:48 PM
a few more nearing completion

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:49 PM
almost done

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:51 PM
front almost done

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:53 PM
I then decided to change over from gas to propane...fairly easy conversion and much easier than a EFi set up with a computer and wiring issues..

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:57 PM
all that wiring is for my auxillary fuse panel for my 6 sets of lights..

snohman
08-28-2005, 11:59 PM
I mounted my propane tank in the back...

snohman
08-29-2005, 12:02 AM
here's what it looked like when it was done...a little too high for serious rock crawling so i lowered approx 4 inches with some flatter softer leafs up front
and removed the spacer in the coils in the rears

snohman
08-29-2005, 12:04 AM
more shots before lowering

snohman
08-29-2005, 12:05 AM
lowered and ready to wheel

snohman

done...

I'm very happy with the way it all come out...the truck works great
and is very trailworthy...just point and shoot..Here's one at the Toyota jambo at Johnson Valley

do you have a perfect approach? what front springs and tire size? awesome truck. thanks alot

snohman
08-29-2005, 06:18 PM
I currently am running 42" TSL swampers and I grooved them for a little
better traction and to soften up the stiff sidewall..I'm running some
All-Pro comp buggy front leafs that are very flexy and seem to work very
well...I relocated my front end forward about 2" to clear the tires and
have a better approach angle.here's a pic with my old 39.5 IROKs...

snohman
08-29-2005, 06:20 PM
made it up without spinning a tire... :redspotda

08-29-2005, 11:34 PM
wow man, i have to hand it to you, you do things the right way, not like all the hacked together pieces of shit that i see around. truely an awsome job. How is the propane working out, i have been thinking of converting, what is your power like, what was the total cost approximately?

snohman
08-30-2005, 11:19 PM
I do like the propane system.it works very well and I have not had any problems with the way it runs.I think the horsepower feels about the same
but have noticed a increase in fuel consumption. It took about 3-4 hours to completely install and was a fairly easy modification. The only negative thing
i would say is that if you run out of fuel your screwed.I will be going to dual tanks soon. :help:total $ about 850.00

snohman
08-30-2005, 11:36 PM
twist it up

Thanks for the compliment...I have owned the rig since 83 and have always enjoyed the truck. It is now a trailer queen but has some good miles left in it.

I bet, thease things generaly run forever. Wouldnt give up mine for any sum of gold to be honest heh, guess you could say i need her just as much as she needs me :D, got mine from the original owner who pretty much abused it to the fullest extent of the word possible for 23 years. What sold me tho was the fact that it ran and drove like new even still at 140k.
One toy I know I wont outgrow :D

Anywho keep up the good work, and happy trails!

just outta curriosity, where did you find the R151f trans?

Novacron
09-05-2005, 07:29 PM
Great rig my friend, looks like that thing would rock crawl like a dream ;)

I have an older pickup very similar to urs, same color and alll, except it's still a stock 4x4.

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:02 PM
well...it's been awhile since I last posted up on here...I have really
made some modifications to the Toy and there's no looking back now..
I wanted to lighten up the rear so the rear half of the frame had to go.. :redspotda

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:04 PM
I cut the frame about 18" or so behind the cab..I welded the open frame closed and used 1 3/4" .120 wall tubing for the main frame and 1 1/2" .120
wall tubing for the exo and support pieces..wanted to keep the winch in the rear so I used the existing winch plate and welded it in..

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:10 PM
with a much smaller and narrower bed I decided to mount the propane into the tool box..

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:22 PM
well...you have to love the Toy rear ends but they do have their limits..
I ran a v-6 rear for almost 2 years with 39.5" IROKS and 42"s Swampers
with no breakage ..even with dual t-cases and 4.:56 and a R151f turbo tranny
I was looking for lower gears..I broke a axle and snapped a few teeth off a ring gear so a new rear end was needed...a Currie extreme-duty 9" housing
and 35 spline axle package was the ticket...5:86 R&P,chrome moly axles, disc brakes and a Strange HD housing...bulletproof :redspotda

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:25 PM
1350 yoke and all the goodies make for a nearly indestructable rear end

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:29 PM
I needed a super strong rear housing that could take some heat and welding
without warping..the Currie exreme-duty housing uses .250 wall dom tubing
and has a brace welded all the way across.. here's a pic mounted and painted... :redspotda

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:32 PM
9" rear

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:36 PM

just outta curriosity, where did you find the R151f trans?
you can find them if you look hard enough...I found the tranny and t-case together(23 spline)...check the Pirate board ..last time i checked there was 1 or 2 in the classified section.. :redspotda

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:48 PM
Great rig my friend, looks like that thing would rock crawl like a dream ;)

I have an older pickup very similar to urs, same color and alll, except it's still a stock 4x4.
yea...you have to like the 260:1 1st gear crawl ratio now with the 5:89 R&P :grin:did you say "stock"...?

Boost_Junkiee
02-20-2006, 08:48 PM
nice rig, thats real similiar to what my plans are. What made you keep the 18" after the cab. Did you need that for the mounting of your trailing arms on your 4-link? I was planning on whacking mine right after the cab and boxing that in. Not really keeping much after the cab. I wish I had the $ for DOM but my wallet calls for HREW, hopefully it wont make that much of a difference strength wise. I really dig the way you did your triangulated four-link have you thought about using johhny joints intead of sperical?

snohman
02-20-2006, 08:55 PM
I use a johnny joint style on the frame mounted end...you can get a little more flex from a heim type joint with misalignment bushings and a few other tricks..I used 1 1/2".250 dom for the lower links and then sleeved that with a 1 3/4" .120 dom tube...have yet to bend any of the links even though they have plenty of abuse and rock hits...370" wall thickness...those lower arms are HEAVY!!!

I have always wanted to go to a full hydro steer set up so the Dana 60 in the front was going to have some serious beef added to it...
check out these steel fab 60 knuckles from "welder built"....
grade 8 5/8" bolts ...these things are the shiat..!! :redspotda

snohman
02-20-2006, 09:08 PM
why have the baddest knuckles without some unbreakable inner parts..
check these monster 300-m Bobby Long Dana 60 u-joints out...

sweet truck. how do you like the bbcs shocks.

snohman
02-20-2006, 09:21 PM
it's really not too much fun to turn 42" donuts at 3 psi and a Detroit Locker
so the full hydro steer was next...PSC high pressure pump kit and a double
ended ram was needed..

snohman
02-20-2006, 09:23 PM

Very nice man, very nice. :redspotda

When you mentioned $850, did you mean that's what the pane set up conversion ran ya?

You also mentioned power being pretty much the same but you've noticed a higher consumption. How much higher??

Reason for my ?'s is I've been wanting to go pane but got laid off and now my rig is my DD. Pane's cheap but not if it gets consumed twice as fast. I was just about to post a Pane'd DD post on pirate when I saw your post. You shared so much of your build that I figured you'd be willing to share pane info first hand. I'll just bypass or postpone the pirate thread. I know about quite a few trail only conversions but no DD conversions. I know that's not because of a power issue and was wondering if it was due to the incresed consumption not making it worth doing. Or if it's just the PITA of finding a place to fillerup. The big plus for me and the reason I initially considered it is like you said....get rid of the carb and get injection without a computer. :redspotda

yea..about $850.00 for the propane kit....I usually run a gallon of "pane"
every hour while wheelin...power is about the same but I really dont think
I'd want to run this setup on a DD...it's hard to find a place to fill up for sure and if you run out, your screwed...for a DD ,Id find a used 22re and bite the bullet...but I love the "pane" for serious off road use...

wow.
you have done a great job. that propane intake is sweet. so many times i have stalled out on steep inclines thinking, i i had propane this wouldnt be happining.
you must have really good paying job.
what do you do for a living?

snohman
03-08-2006, 07:55 PM
Snohman; what front springs/hanger are you using? I've been contemplating going big with Dana 60's and 40's or 42's on my next sas instead of going with toys and 37's. How wide is that front axle? Killer build man!I'm glad you dig the rig..it works very well and I'm happy with the 60 front and Currie rear...I liked the Toy runnin gear but to run any tire over 37",the Toy stuff just won't last.I spent too much money on birf's and axles..I shoulda went 60 along time ago..I'm runnin the Skye drop hanger
in the front along with the All pro comp front leafs..I found a Dodge 60 frt but would reccomend a Chevy unless you can get a deal on a dodge due to cast in spring pad bolts on dodges.I narrowed the front about 6" to a width of 61 1/2" wms...I can run wheel spacers if I need to go wider but like the
front just a few inches wider than a Toy for trails in the sierra's...go 60 and never have to worry again..

snohman
03-08-2006, 08:04 PM

Yea...the propane works very well and I get it for free... :redspotda
with the 5:89 r&p and dual cases with a 4.7,I never worry about stalling
on any hill..I do have a great paying job but I prefer to spend all the wife's money on my rig... :spanka:actually, she bought the Toy brand new in oct.83
when we were still dating..I had a 67 Bronco, sold it and married her...

yea...you gotta love it..Currie extreme duty housing,35 spline chrome moly

that is one of the nicest rigs i have ever seen! if my truck didn't need to be a daily driver i would deffinitly want it to be like that. but just out of curiosity what does the propane setup do? i have heard of putting propane injection in deisles but not much other then that. but i'm only 16 so i miis a lot of things.

allows your motor to run at any angle.

snohman
03-09-2006, 06:58 PM
What he said....propane equipped vehicles can run at any angle, the propane will adjust to run at any altitude, engine oil stays very clean, less maintenance
and you can run a higher compression motor without predetonation...I really like my set up..

It's kind of funny, because this looks exactly like the truck I built for a dude named Snohman?

snohman

high power headlights are no good without some larger wiring.
Roger Brown makes a very nice and simple Toyota headlight wiring upgrade.
it comes with 2 30 amp relays and basically plugs into your existing wiring.
you will need a constant source of power to power up the relays.

His wife is a baller.

Where you running toyota casses?

What happend to the rear end? axle, tube, etc?

I was running Wrecking ball on Saturday and made it about 2/3 of the way up when I decided to take a bad line up against a 8' high rock...needless to say,the rock won.I was running dual Toy 23 spline cases..I broke the output
shaft on the rear case and twisted my square tube driveline at a 22 degree angle.I'm not sure what broke first but the bridge that has the 2 upper control arms for my 4 link ripped about 1/2 way off from the housing.I think the bridge went first and then caused a chain reaction of drivetrain carnage.
I will be reinforcing the bridge on the next rebuild with a few more gussetts and more down tubing from the bridge to the axle.I also exploded the rear Spicer 1350 u-joint into pieces.funny thing is,the stock Toy u-joint at the t-case survived.hard to believe since the .250 reciever hitch tubing twisted.

What are your plans for driveline?

Have you thought of using a thicker square tubeing?

I was using .250 wall and that is about the thickest wall square tube you can
make work...it's not the thickness problem but anything above 30 mph or so and the driveline is out of balance/wobbles very badly..but they R cheap, nearly indestructable and easy to build..... :help:

Stick to square. The way you drive people think your driving Ms. Daisy anyhow. Not only did he twist the square shaft, the weld between the shaft and the flange broke. He was so wedged it took a 9000 pound winch to pull him out from under that rock. At first it didn't budge, but it finally broke loose.

I dont know if you answered this yet but.....

What front springs do you have?
What rear coils?
Have you thought about going to coil overs?
What about linking the front?

I'm currently running All-pro comp buggy springs in the frt(3" lift)but they seem to be bent a little..so something is going to change
running Rock Equipment coils in the rear...17" overall length....very soft
I did have a set of coil overs but traded for the hyro steering and never looked back...coil overs are expensive and require some tuning and time..
I'm not sure how much more travel I can get from my Toy with coil overs..
I've been collecting some parts and pieces for a 4-link front for a while..we'll see what happens...I've got alot of other projects to complete first
engine swap, transfer case rebuild, fuel system change over, and possibly rebuilding the trans to run that 185 HP motor...in between work, the kids and the wife....... :bluecryin ..never enough time...

Haha yeah i know how the family thing is. I just had a little boy about a month ago.

Im planning on linking my rear pretty soon. Would you suggest those coils? or differant ones?

coilovers in the front are nice for jumping and going fast over rocks.

you can use almost any type of coil you can find.I would use something with a soft spring rate for the rear..jeep tj's,yj's all have coils and you can find them used on e-bay or most wrecking yards.you'll just have to set up the rear according to the compressed height on your coils....ford aerostar van coils are also cheap and easy to find...I like to use new coils and the ones from Tony at Rock Equipment work great...he can sell you all the links, tabs, tube adaters and all the acc's you'll need...great guy and has alot of useful info.....if you plan on a daily driver with coils it's not a good thing...off road only or stick to leafs...just my 2 cents worth..

i know this is a little late to ask but...

how long did you run your toy rear end before you changed to your currie 9"??

how big of tires did you run on it, cuz i want to run about a 40" tires on my rig that will have a 60 front and toy rear

I ran a V-6 toy rear for almost 2 years with some big tires. 1st year with a set of 39.5" IROKS and 2nd year a set of 42"'s TSL's before I started breaking stuff...broke 1 axle,a
detroit locker and a chunk off a ring gear over the 2 year period.....just lay off the skinny pedal
and you'll have it last for quite some time depending on how hard you wheel your rig....I'd use a 4:10,4:56 or 4:88 R&P... anything lower and I think with 40"s your going to find the weak link:bluecryin

I will stick to square no doubt....
I drive like Ms.Daisy cause you guys up front keep getting stuck and hung up in every rock hole in the trail.get rid of those puny little tires and quit taking an hour on every obstacle. :help: I could crawl on my hands and knees and still beat you up the trail.......from my view in back it looked like you driving Mr. Daisy in your front seat..
