dove tail

i am going to dove tail the bed on my 85 pu. has anyone done this by making a cut out of the middle? all the ones ive seen from my buddies, they cut through the wheel wells? is there an easier way?

i am planning on making triangle cut down the middle and cutting the bed away from the part of the bed closest to the cab, so that i can keep the wheel wells intact.
