Engine screwed or what???

Today has been a shitty day. My timing belt guides are broken off on my 91 22 re so I got a timing chain kit and replaced it. I went to start it up and it started but ran like crap so I figured I was a tooth or two off. I lined up the small dimples on the upper and lower gear and started it up and it ran good and then a noise from the back of the engine started and it got worse and worse until it sounded like the valves were coming apart. I took the valve cover off a few more times but couldn't stop the noise so I'm stumped. anyone know anything??

Tomorrow i'm pulling the head off and the oil pan to see if there is any damage I can see but this is just BS. Thanks for any help

Did you pull you oil pan and clean out all of the pieces of the broken guides? Might be part of what's causing your noise.

i'm gonna pull it off next and see what I can do. It would be nice if that was casuing the noise but i don't think so. I'll let you know what I find though
