Does anyone know where to find a great cam for low end torque? My 93 22re is a slug under three grand. I'll be doing a build up next year of either this truck or possibly an extra cab. I've actually thought of picking one up with a 3.0 liter v6 because of the big torque gains downlow. I know about the old head gasket problems. How do you guys with experience withh the v6 like it? I'll be running big tires, between 40 and 42 but will have around a 7.0 gear ratio in the axles an dual t-cases. Anywhoo just thought I'd ask, and no I don't want to put a 4.3 in, too much work and weight. Thanks!

I would recommend the Downey broad range EFI cam if your engine is 100% stock. If you have any minor modifications like a ported head or even just a header and an exhaust, I would recommend a Crane Cams Stage 2. Don't believe the hype that high lift, long duration cams will make a 22RE fast. 22RE's don't respond well to them unless highly modified. Stick with a mild cam with up to about 280 duration. If you want to spice it up, buy a cam AND an adjustable cam gear so that you can mess with the timeing to find what works the best. DO NOT OVER-CAM A 22RE!

I forgot to mention that to the best of my knowlage, nobody makes a cam for the 22RE with a big torque gain in mind. 22RE's are pretty torquy in stock form. Most of the cams on the market are designed to work within the power range of the 22RE, which like you said, is at higher RPM. I wouldn't recommend 3.0 V6. 3.0's haven't earned a very good reputation. The power gain from a 22RE to a 3.0 really isn't that impressive. If I were going to spend the money and the effort, I would concider a 3.4 V6 conversion. If you are a good fabricator, it can be done farily easilly and inexpensive.

Yeah, the 3.0 is not worth it. Low power, more complicated, few aftermarket upgrades. Of course the best thing you can do for low end torque is stroke the 22RE with something like the LC kit, but like 22REKid said, the 22RE has quite a bit of torque already. If you need to get up some rocks, get another transfer case.

Just like my name says. 22RE all the way! I don't know why Toyota ever stopped making them. The 3.0 on the other hand, I know why they stopped making those.

As far as the 3.0 goes, its not really a bad engine. its just not up to the standards we are used to seeing with 22r's and other toyota engines. ive had one for the past 5 years and never really had any problems with it. its not real powerful, and its kind of a b**ch to work on when i have had to do so (after almost 300,000 miles), but it is still light years ahead of anything the big 3 makes in terms of reliability and such.
if you are going to be running 40+ inch tires on your '93 i assume you are going to be doing a SAS? if thats the case and you are considering getting a different Toy for a V6 get an early taco, like 95-97 ish. the 3.4 is much better than the 3.0, can be had with a stick, and you can even supercharge it if you still arent satisfied. Plus there is always the newer 2.7 4cyl that some tacos have, its got as much or more power than the 3.0.
Marlin makes an adapter to mate gear driven t-cases to the r150 (3.0 and 3.4 5 speed) transmissions so you can run your dual cases.

I did the 3.4 swap in a friends truck. The new engine is light years ahead of the 3.0 it replaced. Hills that required downshifting with the old engine now only require a slightly heavier touch on the throttle
I highly recommend it to anyone with the brains to pull it off
