crankshaft pulley

the book recomends using a special puller to remove the crankshaft pulley. do i really need this? and if so does anyone know where to get one. oh and to get the crankshaft bolt broke free do i need to remove the starter and stick a tool in the flywheel or can i just put it in 5th gear. which way do i turn it too?
