Just wondering what the towing capacity (at a decent speed, hopefully 60-65) of an 83 pickup with a 22r, rebuilt about 40k ago, weber carb, running 32s now, 33s later, standard 4.? gears in the rear, marlin crawler L52HD, with a good quality receiver (to come later)... any estimates or personal experience would be of great help
thanks

prolly 5800 lbs. thats what a toyota would be on a nicly built trailer gettin towed behind a real truck. no i prolly wouldnt tow much. esp at 65 mph things can get ugly fast at that speed.

i guess my real question is this... could i get a little 5 X 8 open trailer, throw my fourwheeler and some gear on it and be okay? that's all i really need to tow, maybe one more motorcycle on the trailer or in the bed

Should be fine towing a four wheeler. I have used my 83 to tow a small trailer with a thousand pounds of wood pellets in it, and another thousand pounds of pellets in the bed. I wasn't going anywhere fast, but only had to go a few miles. I can tow my small boat no problem with it.

5x8 open trailer? Your good. Our system says 2wd or 4wd is good up to our open or closed 5x8 trailers. The next size we have up from that is a 6x12, and it is NOT RECOMMENDED. Could it do it? Probably, but if its going to be a long tow, heavy payload, up hills and what not, I wouldn't recommend it. But if your sticking to 5x8... tow away!
I'll check our system when I go back to work on Thurs. and see what the actual payload capacity is for you.

in my tired 87 4 runner I had a 5x8 closed trailer (the big heavy metal kind from u-haul) and had my 250 quad, all my camping gear, plus the back of my 4 runner packed with food and an extra battery. On the freeway I could go 55 no problem, going up hills was a different story. If your from so cal and you know the conejo grade going towards LA on the 101, there's a big grade, and going up it I was averaging 45. I took it off the road and up into the mountains of goreman just fine, I went up some REALLY steep roads in the rain/sleet and had to put it in 4x4 low to make it up hills.
so basically I towed that bastard around for around a week just fine, I wouldn't try anything bigger though unless it was really light

yeah it shouldnt be a problem. i just towed a FULLY LOADED 5x8 closed uhaul trailer from montana to seattle with a loaded bed as well. i wasnt going very fast though....... had to gear down to second on one of the passes. it made it just fine. i have a 84 with a 22r and 33's but i have 4:88's.

With my 94 Nissan I had with a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder (basically same power as a Toyota) I towed a 7 X 10 open trailer for about 500 miles. It was fully loaded and the bed of the truck was loaded. I couldn't get over 60 loaded or empty because the trailer was 7 feet wide so it was a lot wider then the truck and caught lots of wind. Flat ground was no problem, hills really sucked. Plus the trailer was too heavy and it was kind of scary when it would fishtail because the truck was too small and got thrown around.
