Backspacing is the distance between where the wheel mounts to the axle and the inner rim of the wheel. 3.5" backspacing is common on Toyotas for clearence of Tie Rod Ends etc..
The width of the wheel determines how wide a tire you can run. Personally I like to run narrow wheels for off-road to prevent de-beading a tire. But if you are going for looks a 10" wide rim looks good on a 12.50 tire.

so im gna go with 32x12.5 or 11.5 bfg m/t or pro comp m/t's. i have stock steel rims, would those work on that wide of a tire? im prob gna get new rims tho, what backspacing would y'all recomend?
8 inch will work for that small of a tire and use your stock rims if you need to. they will work just finde

ok cool ill prob just keep the same rims and paint em, but if i get rims, its says 3.75 bcakspacing, is that good?
yup the smaller the number the more offset 3.5 on a toyota is average and works well.

this whole number thing is still confusing me, sorry lol but at least i searched.
so if i go 3.75 will my tire stick out farther than a 3.5?
thanks
3.75 on an 8 inch rim
3.75- 8 inches = 4.25 will stick out from the lugs.
