i have recently started a new project 87 p/u. i am adding a 6" lift and have recently rebuilt my head due to a swamped motor. i want to run 35x14.50boggers and i plan on adding a cam and headers hopefuly sometime. should i consider regearing? this is going to be a strait trail rig

I'd either go with 5.71's for a strictly trail rig, or 5.29's if it'll see some pavement.

go with 5.29s. you should try to stay away from the 5.71s due to breakage problems. 5.29s will give you all the gear you need for the street, especially with a refreshed engine. hit up bobby long for a set of gears. he's selling them for $165 to your door, and that's also with a heat treat and cryo. next month I'll be picking up some 5.29s from him.

conny is right about the 5.71's being weaker and more prone to breakage, but when I had my 89 Xtended cab V6 4x4 with 5.71's and 35's, I ended up breaking the detroit locker in the rear one day when I got on it on the pavement. The 5.71's were fine and I know a lot of friends that run 5.71's with 36-38's, and they haven't broke their gears yet and they wheel the heck out of their Toys.

But overall 5.29's will give you plenty of power and you'll still be able to crawl really slow in low range for wheelin'. It'll allow you to run your Toy on the highway and still retain some fuel mileage compared to running 5.71's at 70 mph.

You also need to figure in wether you are gonna upgrade your motor down the road too.
I have 5.29's now and wish I had stuck to the original plan of 4.88 gearing because I am going to be putting a 5mge motor in my truck this summer if all goes right.
4.88's will be the strongest as far as taller gears much more than 5.29's will be.
Also you want wheel speed with boggers so it's your choice what gears to run.

i would do the 5:29's

havnt heard any issues with them at all compared to 5:71's. and think the lower the gears, no matter what motor the easier it is on your engine.

and for trail use bet a dual tcase as well.

for mud get 4.7 and a single tcase in my opinion.

I’ve got 4.88 gears in mine with 35 BFG on now, 36 IROKs later. I have a pretty strong (for a 22re) engine, I didn’t have any trouble in town…on the trail, I’ve got dual boxes so, gearing isn’t an issue there.

put it 4.88s and do dual cases. u will get way more gearing and lots of strength. does ti get drivne to the trail or towed. if towed just keep 4.10s and do duals

5.29s will bring you pretty close to stock gearing with 35's. That means it keeps your power band in he right place for driving on the road. If this is going to be a strictly trail rig and you are going to rockcrawl with it you are going to want to do something in the transfercase. I had 5.29's and a fairly built motor(cam, header, larger exaust,k&n filter) and it did ok until I got onto something technical(the entrance to Upper Hellderado). I would just lose my line because, it was not enough power, and then to much power. I now have dual cases and would like lower gears in one of them. So yes I think you should re gear. If it is going to bea straight trail rig I would say take the money you were going to use to re-gear you axles and do dual cases with gears in the rear. That will give you multiple gearing options when you are wheeling.

buggers on a straight trail rig....low axle gears can fool the rest of the drivetrain into thinking they are still turning 285 metric tires. 571's would be ideal.....they won't be the weak link if installed properly. Spend an hour at my web-page for some gear info. ZUK
