View Full Version : Road Walking
I have an 80 TOYOTA P/Up with 38.5x15 Boggers and even before these tires I had experienced road walk. I have changed the steering box and everything seems to be nice and tight in the front end but it likes to wander if there is a bad spot in the road. Not just a little nudge to the left or right, this thing makes you wander sometimes if your in control. On good roads you can turn it loose and it drives good. It has the same exact problem with 36 TSL's. The steering column has a flexible joint in it near the gear box, it is in good shape but that is the only thing I can think of that may be the problem. Please HELP !!!!!!

What lift kit did you use to fit 38" tires? I was looking and the biggest I could find was Superlift's 7 inch for the 1980, but that probably doesn't flex that well. How much articulation do you have. Thanks, and sorry its off-topic.
I have a 4" Rancho with Longer Shackles and a 2" Body Lift. I have not had any driveline problems or axle wrap problems and my truck has a 410hp 365 ci Chavy engine. Articulation is still pretty good with the smaller lift.

I think your problem would be a combination of everything.
You put those huge tires on, they are fairly soft so they give, the suspension etc makes up for it, you could have bad bushings in your leaf springs, somthing loose, but honestly I don't see that tire being that streetable, you are always going to have some kind of wandering with that big of a tire, no matter what!
Do you have a steering stabliser? Good shocks?
axle rebuild kit. trunion bearing could be bad.
plus all the chev crap and bad lift and huge tires man.
throw some 29 stock tires on it and see what happens.

First let me say that this truck has had 36's on it for 4 years and I have put 42K miles on this truck since lifted. I had radials on it up til 10K miles ago. I got 7500 miles out of 36 TSL Bias Plys and towards the end of that tire life they started wearing irregularly. I blamed the road walk on those tires. I changed the tires and it is no worse nor is it any better. As far as all the Chevy crap goes show me a 22 R with 400 hp and I will gladly take my gas hogging 365 put but for now I will leave the Boggers on it and a power plant in it that has enough power to keep them clean. I had not thought of the trunion bearing, thanks for the input.
woah man im not ragging on the chevy stuff.
granted i hate chevys. i only buy toyota after 35 vehicles.
i have learned my lesson.
and ur engine has that much HP and mine has like 150 HP
and guess what i bet i have more torque than ur motor doesn to the front and rear axles so ya.
im not ragging but if u want to have a pissing contest lets go wheeling and lets go tow up and obstacle and see what vehicle has the torque.
Or you could come wheel with me in the river bottoms and we will see who can keep their tires cleaned off while you wear out a perfectly good winch. BTW I still have a 4.1 ratio with 4.89 gears so I dont have a problem with torque either especially since my cam has been advanced 6 degrees. This is not my first rodeo. I built this rig when I lived in Alaska where it is imperative that you have HP. Again thanks for the trunion bearing idea, I checked and that is probably the problem.
cool good luck on the bearings. and i live in utah we rockrawl not mud bog.
but im sure i could keep my tires clean.

You gotta start somewhere man!
I know of a couple rigs that could probably go more places than what you describe your rig as being, and they are on 31's and 33" AT's!!!
I agree with that. But if you were gonna post what you did then you have to be prepared for retaliation. BTW 31's or 33's going where I cannot go would have to be somewhere dry because it will not happen in mud country.

hey man, the 4runner is a stock daily driver. and the truck has only just begun. when i am done u will not be able to follow me anywhere. and yeah mud is stupid. where is the technical aspect? no u hit the mud as fast as you can and see if u can keet them spinning....stupid. In rocks or mud u have to be careful where your tires are and if ur gonna wrap around that tree. next time you try to mess brag about your stupid azz mud runner u should try in the damn rocks then see how bad your truck sucks
the pissing fights are funny and all. but truth be told i like an all around rig.
i have taken my truck places that buggys can hardly make it. mostly due to wheel base.
your welcome to check my truck out at my website its in my sig line. also if anyone wants to meet in moab memorial and do the pissing fight in person
GETRDUN
This pissing started with me defending myself. Yours is great for Moab, mine is great for the Alaskan Tundra which is what it was built for. I have crawling problems for what I do. I hunt and fish where most people cannot go. wa4x4 made a sly remark and I responded to it. BTW why would you need a loud stereo in a rock crawler? Thats kind of like putting perfume on a :hog:
I am sure if I lived anywhere near Moab I would have built it differently and likewise with you TTR if you lived in AK.
all in all guys. my truck is the best everyone say TTRS'S TRUCK IS THE BEST
lol JUST kidding.
anyways. tmw is correct. we build our rigs for the area at hand. my truck would not last a day up in alaska FACT.
and his truck is not made for rocks FACT.
now that we have established this lets all go buy a jeep.
anyways. i hope we can all just drop this thread.

Just thaught Id throw my two cents in here
When I ran 35" tires on my old rig(jeep cherokee*crys* was a pesent from dad, sold it for my 82 :D) i noticed that even tho i had a beefy aftermarket stabelizer on it, it still experianced what you might call "road walk" Upgrading to a dual rancho stabelizer fixed this issue, but im sure you thaught of that already :P
As for slamming on 33" tires I take that as kinda offensive :P I run 33" tires here because most the trails on the mountains in this area are narrow and ive watched manny high Horsepower trucks roll over in general, because of large wheel size and tall lift, now my trucks nothing to compare to yours but ill have you know i dont even have a stereo in my truck, and the only reason i own it, is so i can explore places most jeeps get stuck ;) and have my fun... So bigger..isnt always better
That and its my daily driver :P
(didnt see that there was a page two to this thread, OOps)
Well anywho i agree difrent trucks are buit for diffrent areas
and it could be worse, we all could be proud jeep owners being shown up by toyota enthusiets
We all have one thing in common too, we love our trucks and we know how to improvise what we have out on the trail, we make most of our stuff for our rigs and we know know to drive them,
Not to say that there arnt any nice looking custom jeeps out there but lest face it, most jeeps are the product of someones awsome mail order catalog and bolt on parts :P
Point: be thankfull for what you have, because you may be lucky to have it at all.

And my stereo is in the daily driver that has seen mud and dirt one or 2 times. It is stock and I just wanted something nice to drive around town for my first car. The truck is the one that I actually wheel...at least when I finish rebuilding the motor...

Ih dont get me wrong, i have a brand new sony explode thats going in my truck as soon as i finish remaking my dash board
(pics and a new poast will be added once i start)
In general im removing the dash pad and the center plastics, weilding everything up so its smooth and not bad looking, then cut holes for my Heater controls and my stereo. Im a firm beliver that your off road beater can look nice on the inside too, and still be pratical and water/mud resistant.
