well i was running one of the trails up at spring creek and came across an abandoned early bronc. it was flipped over and stripped but the rear 9" housing was sitting right there next to it. i looked it over and it looks ok. it's very rusty but it's not pitted.. it's all just surface rust. it looks to me like a good housing. are you guys breaking rear 8" shafts to where i should consider building this 9"? i know that 5.29 gears are available for it but can i get a 6 lug conversion or 6 lug shafts for it? i will be running 38" tsls. is a 9" wider than a v6 rear axle? if i choose to run the toy v6 axle, i have a 9" housing for sale lol. oh and i need a stock v6 rear axle. thanks

I run a rear V6 3rd and the only damage I've ever done was my fault. I blew a pinion seal and didn't get the gears set right when I replaced it. It ate the R&P. As far as strength goes, I've broken a 700R4 in half and not damaged the 3rd. I'm running stock gearing, but quite a bit of power.

a bronco 9 inch axle sbould be aound the same width unless it is a fullsize bronco. the EB 9 inches are around 58 inches and way stronger then a toy axle. the 3 pinion bearing makes the gears very strong. easily upgradeable to 35 spline. u can also get 6 lug axles made for pretty cheap

all i have is the housing and it's very rusty. is it worth building and putting in? it would cost considerably more than putting in a v6 8". i found a 8" v6 locally for $150. i know the 9" is alot stronger but are you guys breaking rear ends enough that it would be worth it? thanks

my next rear end is goin to be a 60 with 9 inch outers. i worry about the ring gear with 40 in iroks.

The axleshafts are both about the same size so they are about the same strength. The 9" third is stronger because of the pinion support bearings. The weak point is the outer wheel bearing. It`s a press fit and when they fail, the whole axleshaft walks out of the housing! `66 to `77 Bronco axles fit a Toy perfectly. I had both the 9" and the D44 front from a `72 Bronco but I sold them to a friend and he put 5.89 gears (or 5.86 I can`t remember) and stuck them under his Sidekick. :Rockonman It`s a tossup, the 9" is a little stronger but the Toy axle is lighter and has better ground clearance.

the stock shafts are about t he same size. if u are upgrading to 6 lug axles u may as well get 35 spline. and build the 3rd to accept 35 spline stuff.

i'm curious as to how many toy v6s are getting broken.
as for me i like mine. hammered on it all week in moab with stock shafts 35" tires 529s and a trd locker. of course your 38s might be a little more mean.
i think you should stay toyota unless people are breaking them just cuz its cheaper

My stock Toyota stuff stays alive and well with 33s and now with 36" TSLs but I play in mud not on the rocks. Both my diffs are welded and I have a 3.0 with automatic tranny. I`m not shy with the throttle. I though about going to a 9" rear and D44 front but other than the birfields, I find the Toy stuff as strong or stronger. I am building a 351W for my 4Runner and I want to keep the Toy axles but if I start to break them I will go straight to D60 hardware.

Like I said, I run the rear V6 with full old-style Detroit. The only reason I blew the R&P was due to not getting it set back up properly. I'm running enough engine to tell if they were a weak point, as well as running 35s.

ok from what you have said i think i'm going to stick with the v6 toy 8". mainly because it's lighter and has more ground clearance and i doubt a stock shaft will be easy to break. even if it does break, all pro sells chromo ones with a 5 year warrenty. as for the gears, i need something that will hold up to my 38's with dual cases. i'm thinking precision 5.29's cryo treated by bobby long. i'm not sure on the brand though. for those that have used multiple brands of gears, what brands did you stick with and why. thanks

Unless the housing is a 76' or 77' don't bother with it. The 76' and 77' housings are well gusseted and are big bearing models. The earlier housings were kinda spindly and are prone to bending if used hard and aren't always of the large bearing variety, either way the Toyota shafts are bigger than the Bronco's puny 28 spline shafts. I know these things because I also have an early Bronco that has gone through plenty of shafts and suffered a cracked housing to boot. It now sports a 77' housing and 31 spline full floater kit.......love that truck!.........Hans
