I am going to be tearing into my front main seal on my 85 runner. I am assuming that sealing surface will need to be sleeved. I know others have successfully fixed by using low profile seal which allows the seal to contact a different portion of the surface.

If I have to use a sleeve will I be sleeving the balancer, the crankshaft or both? Once I sleeve it would I just use the stock seal or should I still use the low profile seal, or does it matter?

Part #'s would be very helpful if anyone has suggestions, thoughts or recommendations.

i dont have part numbers but you will have to sleeve the balancer

I just put one in my 22re. At first i didn't notice the wear on the pulley shaft, so the first one leaked real bad. Then when i went to go get a new one I got a lower profile one, and it sealed fine. I would just be sure to take your old seal into the parts store, to make sure you get one that will make contact in a different place. As for the sleeve, I didn't do it, but then again I didn't even realize you could do that. Doesn't sound like a bad idea, but a little more commplicated.

John,

thanks for your tips. I could not get it done this weekend as the wind was to strong to work in the driveway. Maybe I can get the boat taken care of and get it out of the garage so I can pull the runner in.

I think I am going to have to pull the radiator to get to mine as the fan is one piece so taking off one blade is not going to be possible. I have to pull the lower radiator hose anyway as I noticed it was bulging so it will be drained anyway.

This is going to be more than a 1-day project as I want to do many things. If I can tear into it and leave it apart overnight, it will make it easier to get things done. Maybe next weekend if I can get the parts I need.

I might need to go ahead and spring for a parts washer as everything is pretty caked up on the front side of the engine.

Stupid question:

When I change the oil pump cover seal and the crank seal should I be using anti-seize on the bolts or will that cause them to back out over time?

my 22re leaks oil pretty bad sometimes. i dont exactly know where it is coming from but its somewhere in the front by the water pump i think. the oil some how sprays all over the the underside of the hood too. almost like the fan is spraying it on there. it doesnt leak everytime, usually when i drive it kinda hard it does. but sometimes i will drive grampa style and it still does. also i recently had to replace my alternator, it was pretty soaked in oil. will oil ruin an alternator? i tryied cleaning the engine and trying to find the location of the leak but it is too dirty and the oil leaks onto some stabilizer bar then onto the ground so its a weird pattern. if i pressure wash the motor what do i need to cover up so i wont **************** it up? has anyone every expericened this??? i'm new to this site and im not sure if this will be on the main page. how the hell do i get it on there?

Could be the front main crankshaft seal or the oil pump seal or both. I have never pressure washed my motor, but generally you want to cover the electronics as well as the air cleaner box. Other than that I would watch for hoses and make sure that they stay on. I know other pressure wash and I am sure some of them can give you more guidance.

One of the most common oil leaks on the 22RE are the two halfmoon seals on the valve cover. You can't torque them down too hard since the bolts go to the rocker assembly, so they tend to leak over time. We thought my wife's needed a rear main and it turned out to be the rear seal on the cover. It's also a pretty easy fix.

The top of the timeing cover sprays like that, I have also seen the oring on the disturbutor leak enough that it goes all over check those also
