You need 7 things.
1: sawzall with metal blade.
2: 12 oz can of ice beer for mental prep
3: 12 oz can of ice beer for to ease the doubt of sig. other,
4: 12 oz can of ice beer to keep going after first two cuts, usually where cab connects at rear window
5: 12 oz can of ice beer to quiet the doubting loudly sig. other
6: 12 ounce can of ice beer to ease "sawzall remorse"
7: 12 ounce can of ice beer to convince sig. other to ride in it after period to get sober
Seriously, just get 'er done. Then either get a top made, or look in the slammer mini truk mags. They should have a top kit.
Avatar is fifth I have done, including two hatch backs, and one 4 door.
:D    :Rockonman topless is the only to fly/wheel

Not an 81. But you'll get the Idea
How To:
Have a Beer, Look at truck. Have another Beer, Draw lines on truck, Beer again and get out sawsall. Beer, look at sawsall plug it in and pull trigger a couple times. Whoo hooo. Now have a Beer
While drinking your last beer, Call buddy to see if he has more beer. Drink last beer while waiting for buddy to come over with more beer.
Now the two of you have a beer while looking at the truck "Dude you not REALLY gonna cut the ROOF off are ya" "Um... Yes after I have another beer"
Final product

hey 4hummer, since you now have no rear window, did you put anything cool in the tailgate? like speakers or a built in grill or somethin?

Now, I have the 4x van that is going under the knife, just gotta figure out how to give it a replaceable hard top, ala early runner style.
Oh, and I need a welder. :cuss: :Rockonman :Freak:

I wanted to chop the top on my 82 toyota 4x4 longbed,
My buddy thinks its going to look really stupid,
I love the sun personaly,
Anyways my questions are:
Does anyone know where i can get a soft top kit for a 82 pickup?
or am i going to have to make something up?
Also I was wondering if i could get some personal opinions as to how smart this would be to do in a place like the LA area of claifornia
Is there a good alarm system i could invest into?
Im not about to let my baby run off with bandits :P

Uhhh, stupid?
No worse than a topless van.
Convert kit?
A: make your own.
B: look in a mini truck magazine. Popular thing to do for the slammer crowd
Alarm?
Any good stereo shop.

So you think if I got a good alarm on it, and took some extra theft prevention precautions I would be ok with a soft top conversion?
Im really Itchin for my sun :P
BTW im totaly digging the 4x4 van prodgect! I always knew those would make awsome rigs :D

I was in the junkyard one time and there was an 81 2wd in there w/ a busted ass front end, but it was convertable. Whoever did it did a really good job on it too, i almost bought the cab for that reason. The yard wanted like 500 for it though, and it was purple...wtf...so I didnt get it. Point being, it can be done, and it looks hella cool. Just make sure you have a roll cage in the sucker because you lose alot of your structural integrity when you chop the top. I know for a fact there is a write-up over at pirate about making a removeable hardtop first gen...and having it be weather-tight at that..check it out.
