Bought an 86 4runner. It did not have a stereo. So, now I am trying to wire up a new head unit.
Head unit has red & black and yellow wires.
4runner has:
blue w/white strip and red horizontal lines
purple
gray
light green
pink
blue
These wires remain in an apparent unused plug(the rest were cut):
white w/black and red horizontal
green w/red.
Any ideas on how to wire a new head unit up?
(currently bidding on a TSM on ebay)

check with a car stereo store or department, they may have a wiring harness adapter. but sounds like the prev owner had an aftermarket stereo, so the wires may not be all stock.
you may have to cut the harness off and follow the wires from the speakers back and figure out which is which. then match em up to the back of the stereo.
If I were you, I would use what's necessary there and run some new speaker wires for yourself. On the new unit, you have black(ground), yellow (+12v constant power - fused), and red(accessory or ignition power, telling the unit to turn on). Just hook the black wire to a ground point somewhere. You could hook it to the White/black stripe wire, but you'll get less noise if you ground it directly. Test the wires you have to see which is +12v and which is ign(+12v only when the key is on). I think Red w/green stripe is ign., and blue/white is +12v. The rest of the wires would run the stock speakers and a lot of times the 4runners had "powered" speakers in the rear (with their own little amplifiers built in). If you want to keep these, they have the 2 speaker wires plus a positive(blue), negative(white/black), and turn-on(white). Just get some good speaker wire and run that to your speakersfrom the deck. The harnesses you buy are great if the truck still has the stock connectors, but if not they're a waste.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Just finished wiring the stereo.
Thank you!
