View Full Version : Fuel system problem on a 22re

I recently bought an '86 Runner and it has a hopped up 22RE motor. Supposedly it has an adjustable cam gear and the head is shaved some. Here is my problem......when I am driving down the road I smell raw or fouled out fuel. Also when I am driving at a constant speed the check engine light comes on and then I can shift gears or give it more gas and the light goes off. The motor has good power and idles like a dream but I am only getting like 9 mpg. The air flow meter looks like it has been taken apart and the plug over the adjustment screw has been knocked out and you can tell that someone has been tuning it. I dont really understand why anyone would take the thing apart when I understand that it only measures the incoming air. I am wondering if that could be my problem or if could be my throttle position sensor. Can you test an air flow meter? if so how and what am I looking for? Also can you test a throttle position sensor? I really need some help.

It would seem you are running very Rich, Your AFM sounds like it could have something to do with that, as well as you TPS could be out of wack. Might be an idea to start there and see how it goes.

If the check engine light has come on check and see if a code is stored. Raw fuel smell could be fuel pressure regulator on back of the fuel rail.

Get a known good AFM and check the TPS adjustments. Make sure you pull the EFI fuse so the ECU will reset.

It's common practice to open up the AFM (air flow meter) and re-index the gear to lean/richen out the mixture to compensate for other engine mods, ie: cam. Perhaps that's what someone did but, maybe went too far? Check here: http://4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/AFM/index.shtml Hope this helps.........Hans
