hello, my name is Paul. this is my first time on this board.
i am pretty new to Toyota's, this is probably a question that
everyone here already know's the answer to.
i have an '85 4x4 p/u with a bad motor. i have heard the
old rwd Celicas with the 22R, 22RE is the same motor.
i bought an '84 Celica today with a 22RE. i called the parts
store today about timing set/gasket set. the guy told me
there are different sets for '84 and '85 motors. are they not
the same? will the motor i bought work? also are there any
other parts i should get from the car that will work on pickups
before i haul the car to the junkyard?
thanks

The motor you bought will work. I put a Celica motor in my truck, I didn't change the oil pan so the front axle put a nice dent in it so now it clears fine! It holds oil, just looks ugly. If you put the oil pan from the truck on make sure you change the oil pick up tube as well.

Celica motor will work, as will the 22R from a Toyota Corona. You may need to change exhaust manifold in addition to oil pan.

There IS a difference between 84 and 85 22R's, the break-over point is 8/84, so you'll need to know the mfr date of the donor car in order to get correct parts. (One of the differences is deck height of the block.)

thanks guys
so i guess the deck height explains the different timing set
the celica was an automatic, are the cranks the same?
do i just install a pilot bearing?
will the '85 ECM work with this motor? or do i need the one
from the car? is there anything else i could use from this car?
does anyone want it?

When I was done with my 78' Celica I gave it to a guy for letting me borrow his car trailer. He told me to just put it on the trailer when I brought it back. He took it for scrap metal, I guess he got $96, it didn't even have a motor or tranny. I was going to donate it to the fire department, they use them to burn for training. You can get a tax write off for the donation.

the only difference is the deck height from 84 to 85. in 85 the deck height was taller

Every state around Wyoming has a toyota club, what is that all about?!!! we have just as much awsome offroading as the rest and maybe better than some most how about some of us get one going? i would be more than glad to head it and what have ya. I know some REALLY good spots and places that would make a challenge for any offroader in the surrounding states. If folks are intrested let me know huh ? im in the southwest corner of the state and i know about all the sticks there are to know. some food for thought. :Rockonman

I'd use the ECM from the donor.
Early FI Celica's used mechanical FI vs the EFI of later Celicas and 85+ trucks/4Runners. Was 84 Celica EFI or mech FI?

the Celica is EFI. the motor looks identical to the one
in the truck, except the valve cover is shaped a little
different

I completed the exact same swap last month. Only things I would reccomend would be to swap all of your efi components from your 85 pu so that if the celica had the old analog efi, you won't have any problems. In fact the only thing I used off the celica was the block, and head. It may take you a little more time to do the swap this way, but you can avoid a lot of problems. Almost all of the brackets, are going to be different, and the celica block will not have the knock sensor on it, located near the oil filter. I did not catch this until after I dropped the new block in, so now my check engine light stays on all the time. It doesn't seem to affect the way it runs though. I have heard that you can weld a nut to your motor mount same thread as the sensor, relocate the sensor there, and avoid this problem. other than that you shouldn't run into any problems, just take your time, and swap everything you can from the truck onto the celica block. If you have any promlems send me an e-mail, toyotaboy1000@aol, and I will try to help. You are on the right track though, replacing the timing chain, while you have it out. Try and replace as many seals and gaskets and even freeze plugs as you can now, because it is going to be a lot easier now, while the motor is out than it will be later. hope this helps.

thanks Jon,
i was planning on replacing the timing chain and all gaskets and
seals while the motor is out. i didn't even think about the freeze
plugs. good idea. i will get back with you if i run into any problems
thanks again

Freeze plugs are the one thing I forgot, and now i regret it, because i think one of them is leaking between the engine and tranny. I'm going to have to drop the tranny to fix it. Wish i would have done it when it was out.

I also need a motor for my truck.

What years are good for the celica and the corona. I have a 91 truck, if that makes any difference. The thing is I need everythign for the motor. I bought a truck with the motor missing so any suggestions?

TIA
