I have a relatively new starter, It just got replaced within the last year and a half. My truck is an 81 w/ a refurbished 20R in it (the 20R runs awesome and I got it cheap, and needed a motor...dont ask...lol). I have a bad choke on my carb, so it takes a while to start the motor when its cold. I give it a light shot of starting fluid (I know, not good, but...only way...) then I crank it a few times and it starts. Well, yesterday morning, it wasnt cold out, so I gave her a shot of fluid, and started to crank. It cranked and cranked and finally died and now there is barely an audible click from the starter. At first I thought I had drained the battery, so I charged it, but the volt meter is registering full battery power. Did I fry the starter solenoid? I would really like some help, I need my truck back in running condition very soon. Plus its nice and I did my quick release hinges, and Im anxious to run w/ the doors off.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a selinode to me. maybe check the power and ground wires on the starter. Crwl under the truck and have someone bump it to see if the starter tries to kick out. If it dont kick out its the selinoid if it dont kick out or spin then its your starter. if u need help let me know

Its time for a new starter...the solenoid has crapped out I think. The Swap Meet is this weekend right? Im gonna cart around a bunch of parts that I need to get out of my shed. Unless you want em Jake...Buy me a starter and you can have doors, fenders, hood tailgate and a big ol bucket of misc. crap, including a full power steering setup and a carb for a 22R.

A case of Coors or a starter for the carb...
I really dont care about money dude, you can have it. Did u get rid of your springs yet? If you need anything else, let me know. How bout I trade you all my stuff for the springs? I need to move parts out of my shed is all.

Toyota has the worst starters I swear. I have replaced the starter in every toyota that I have ever owned sometimes more than once.

This is my third time having this one remanufactured... :D Oh well...what can you do, They need to make a GM starter adapter, just like you can do w/ the GM alternator.
Jake, what do ya say? All my parts for your springs? A case of Coors for the carb... :read:

hit the solenoid with a wrench or something, the things probably just jammed, mines always doing this

Fix the choke, man its a 30 min job tops probally just a bad spring. If you do a google search there is a rebuild write up out there on 4x4wire.com

Check the resistance on the power cable going to the starter. They don't last forever. I have found 'em on different vehicles from 75 to 300 ohms. Replaced the cable and in every instance starter problem solved. (Check the ground cable too, from battery to chassis)

I had the couldn't get enuff current thru the starter to do anything syndrome a few years ago, and it turned out to be the contact studs in the solenoid.. they were really pitted out after 70k. The replacements were something like $7 from the local motor shop, and they solved my problem.
i recently replaced my starter too. we thought there was a dead short to the starter as well as the bad selenoid but it turns out all we had to do was put in the new starter and replace the spark plug wires and it starts great now, and the battery keeps its charge. I would never buy a toyota starter. go after market from checker or autozone. they have a life time warranty. you can't really go wrong. if you refurbish the old one it will probably die again anyway and then you have to go through the hell of taking it out again. I dont why toyota put the starter where they did. :Freak:
