I just picked up the Toyota Factory service manual and was glancing through it. There is a tremendous amount of reference to specialty tools and htey are used in almost every procedure. I know that many of them are not necessary. Are there any specialty tools that I should really be looking at getting for particular jobs.

52 mm socket, fish scale, flat end snap ring pliers for front end servicing
everything else I have just used regular tools, you need some big torx socket to do transmissons, a peice of 1 1/2 in pipe to seperate birfeild(works nice with a floor anchor flange) pilot bearing puller for removing front axle seal that is about all I can think of off the top of my head and I have rebuilt everything on a toyota from tires to the top of the cab. :Nerd:

52MM socket ! Who makes one and where can I get it? What might I be using a socket of this size for?
Thanks for the tips. I am assuming the fish scale is a great way to measure the force required to rotate a front wheel bearing when setting preload?
Thanks again.

52mm for wheel bearings, the fish scale is for setting preload on the steering knuckles, so are the pliers for removing the snap ring behind the hub. the write up on how to do it is on 4x4wire.com

It's a 54mm (or 2 1/8") socket. Sears has it, as well as most auto parts stores.

Does it matter if it is 6 point or 12 point. I normally try to get 6 point, but if it doesn't matter I won't look so hard.

I don't think you will find 12pt. 54 mm. I think that size is only 6pt.....Call the Toyota dealer, I know the Toyota dealer I work for sells a cheap hub socket to service the front hubs....

Can you check and see if there is a part# and mfg (if not Toyota). I have seen 2 1/8 in 12point at sears. Marlin sells a 54 mm 6 point for about 25.00. I am just looking at all my options. I have seen a few others around and will get one soon as rebuilding the front end from the knuckles out needs to be done.
