I'd like to go to moder(new) guages and speedo for my 72 FJ40, anyone have experience doing this? Can you recommend a guage package that'll work well with the wiring in the cruiser? I already have a plate with the circular cutouts for speedo, tach, O/P, temp, volts and fuel.
thanks

I swaped out the gauges in my 73 FJ40. I made my own cluster out of 1/8" aluminum and drilled the holes with hole saws. I had to cut and relocate where the mounting tabs were to get the larger speedo & tach to fit where I wanted them. I also mounted an air fuel meter and volt gauge into the dash on either side of the cluster. I used Autometer Ultralight gauges. They are reasonabaly priced and they look good. The ability to hook them into your stock 40 wiring will depend on if you go with mechanical or electric gauges. Obviously you will need to run the mechanical gauge lines from the senders to your gauges. If you get electric gauges, you can use your wiring and just change our the senders. The fuel gauge is a little tricky as the toyota sender has a different full and empty ohm than the ones available from Autometer. I bought the universal sender from Autometer and modified my stock FJ40 sender to accept it. You will have to adjust the length of the float to get the gauge to read correctly, but it was pretty simple. Also, I just zip tied the stock speedo cable into the new speedometer and it works fine (I went to Six States first to have them make a cable with the correct ends but they did not have one that would work for the LC t-case). Make sure your buy an ameter gauge if you want to use the Toyota wiring. You will fry the volt gauge if you hook it to these wires (although it is easy to just run a couple of new wires).
I love them and its nice to have some confidence it what I am seeing on my gauges now. Plus they look cool! :Rockonman
Good luck!

Hey Moon....
I'm using Autometer Phantom's (got them all off eBay). The plexiglass bezel is temporary, I'm using it more to check the fit and wiring before I make a real one. BTW, I have the one from Warden's. Nice, but the Phantoms are too big. They have a rubber ring around them, and the gauge holes are just too close. I ended up having to trim the dash a little for my bezel. As soon as I can figure out how to attach pics, I'll update this post...noob, ya know?
Hey, it worked!

Sweet thanks i've been looking for an after market cluster gauge for the Land Cruiser. I'm thinking about going to modern gauges as well, i'm tired of guessing what my rig is telling me with ticks. Are there any other vendors out there that make after market cluster gauges?

I didn't see anyone mention it but an extra glovebox door fits where your gauges are, all you have to do is cut out the holes!
