View Full Version : Any Fj40 selectable lockers other than ARB

I am looking for a selectable locker without using an ARB. Cable activated would be most desireable or an FJ80 electric locker if there are specifics on how to get it done step by step with estimated total costs. My Lock Rite has done well but it's worn out and I am tired of lurching in parking lots. Any help would be appreciated. IH8mud had an article about the 80 locker and a phone number to a guy by the name of Tupp but it was a wrong #. Help.

Do you currently run a full-float rear axle? If not, neither of the Toyota options will work for you, they require both a full-float axle and a special axle shaft...
Also, the front axle will require a special inner axle (longer splines for the diff actuator)
Both axle housings will need some minor trimming & fab to get the 80 Series E-locker to fit.
A factory cable locker an be placed in either axle, but it too requires a custom front & rear inner and a rear full-float axle...

Thanks for the input. No I don't run a Full Float axle and yes it is the rear that I am looking to lock first. The idea of just putting the 80 axle under my 40 sounds like the best way to go if I can find one with a locker, and then just change out the front Ring and Pinion to 4:10's. Is the 80 axle stronger than a 40 axle and any idea on how much wider the 80 axle is?
Thanks, Neil

The 80 axle is "theoretically" stronger than the 40 axle (by means of Full-Float design, axle specs are nearly the same)...
The 80 axle is at least 6 inches wider.
What gears does your front have now? Stock was 4.10's

I believe my Fj40 came with 4:11's. If anyone knows someone selling locked fj80 axles please PM me. Thanks.

Good luck.... It is said that only 5% of 80 series trucks (94-97') had the lockers, and they are very sought after... Keep your eyes peeled, they do exist. :D

Every state around Wyoming has a toyota club, what is that all about?!!! we have just as much awsome offroading as the rest and maybe better than some most how about some of us get one going? i would be more than glad to head it and what have ya. I know some REALLY good spots and places that would make a challenge for any offroader in the surrounding states. If folks are intrested let me know huh ? im in the southwest corner of the state and i know about all the sticks there are to know. some food for thought.

Just got back from CM 05. 80 axles in a 40 are unbelievable. When others were getting tippy and needed careful spotting on Pritchett Canyon, I just kept driving and stability is a none issue. If you decide to do the same have Jeremiah Profitt do the install. Amazing! Pics coming soon
