i was out running some mild trails with some buddies earleir today, drove through a mud puddle (12" deeep or so), managed to stall it out, and couldnt get the 'runner started. when i turn the key the starter clicks like its trying to engage, but the engine wont turn over. it is not hydro locked, i pulled the plugs, all were dry and the inside of the airflow sensor was not wet at all. i tried it once with the "clutch start cancel" on, and it turned over for a few seconds, but then afterwards would not fire again. when pull started the truck runs fine, or as fine as it ever has anyway. i suspect the problem is electrical in nature, possibly i rattled a ground loose or something, or maybe the starter got some mud/water in it and that is causing the problem. this is the first starter problem i have run into so im kinda lost at the moment, any help would be appreciated. tomorow im going to bust out the FSM and start trouble shooting. The truck is an '88 4runner V6 Manual transmission 280K on the ODO, unknown if the starter is original or not.

Take the starter to the parts store and have it checked, unless u know how to do it on the bench... Take jumper cables hook to the battery hook other end to the power on the starter then the ground to the starter housing

Should tell u if the starters bad or not
