i have heard of people who have done it, so it can be done. unfortunately thats pretty much all i know, so the difficulty is anybodys guess. i do know that the engine mounts in tacos are different, so that may be an issue.
also, 96+ 2.7L tacos came with a W59 5 speed, so that might pose a problem as i dont know if the pattern is the same as your G52. i got all the tranny info from http://www.marlincrawler.com/trans.html, you might ask them about compatibility etc, the would almost certainly know.
as for the budget of $1000, i would rebuild the 22r, and Taco swap is gonna run more than that almost for sure unless you have all kinds of buddies to hook you up with cheap or free stuff. alternatly you could try to find a 22RE in a bone yard and swap the whole engine in.
good luck man!
