Looking into getting an 83-85 p/u (for the straight axle.) Is there a certain year I should lean towards? Also, which engine and auto or stick?
My goal is to put a 6" lift and possibly a body lift to accomodate 37's.
Suggestions on which suspension? and which size gears?
84-85 is the most desirable because it has the solid trussed axle. 85 is the best because you can get the fuel injected 22re. you can also get the extended cab. i have a 79 and i love it. the fender openings are bigger, so bigger tires are easier to fit with less lift. the 22r came in the 81 and up trucks. you cant really go wrong if you get anything between 79-85. their fun and relatively easy to build and find parts for. hope this helps, and happy wheeling! also, i would go with a manual transmission because the little four bangers are pretty slow with the autos.

It seems like you pay less when the vehicle is stock. For some reason it seems that people think a $300 set of springs and some new tires adds $3000 to their vehicles worth. I would find a nice, stock truck, and do the mods yourself. It also seems like you aren't buying as much of a problem that way.
i agree. then you know that all the work was done right, and it will be easier to fix when it breaks. not to mention, its fun to build your rig yourself, and funner to wheel it when you built it.
