Alright. I have a 1985 4runner 4by4. Stock FI motor.

My truck is leaking oil BAD(like puddles on ground and all over the front passenger corner of motor).

I thought it was either the gasket for the oil filter(I use a PH8 chevy v8 filter) or the oil pan gasket.

So i replaced BOTH the oil pan gasket and the oil filter. STILL my truck is leaking oil BAD.

I can't see where the heck its coming from, but ONLY the area from the oil filter to the front of the motor are saturated in oil. The pass. engine mount is also SOAKED. I can't even see where oil COULD POSSIBLY leak from on the front quarter, passenger side of the motor.

PLEASE TELL ME. What am i overlooking???? Is there ANYTHING ELSE that could possibly leak oil???? This is realy pissing me off because it seems soooo simple, but i don't see ANYTHING except an oil filter, pan gasket, and the block. WTF????

Okay,

You'll need to start the rig and get under it. Check out the following:

1. Oil Pressure Sending Unit, located right below the oil filter
2. Timing Cover

If the timing cover is leaking, you'll need to pull and inspect. At that point, you could be dealing with cam seals, front main seals and a timing chain issue.

You didn't mention whether the truck was making any strange noises when running, or missing. Are the belts and everything in front of the engine covered with oil either?

Thank you SOOO much for a quick reply.

The belts are very DRY. No strange noises/conditions.

The timing cover is not leaking.

I'll check the sending unit(hopefully i can find it). THat would make perfect sence.(since the oil is coming from NEAR the oil filter, but not from it.)

try washing the engine off first. would make it a lot easier to see where the oil is leaking from...

I agree w/ cleaning off the engine first. Brake cleaner and a garden hose is what I normally use.

Here's what to look for, these are some generic oil sending units, you'll find it near the oil filter on that side.

Hey man don't forget about the timing cover seal. I have an 85 runner FI and it leaks oil like crazy. It's because the seal is bad and every time It runs it builds up oil outside the seal, then when i turn off the engine it drips out. Also on mine, when the engine is running the a little oil gets out of that seal and the fan blows it back all over the engine. I'd try that, the seal is 5$, the only catch is that it's a pain to get the crankshaft pulley bolst off. I have an impact and it won't even take it off.
good luck :D
