A friend of mine has a 71 I believe fj40 his first LC, and he says that his front driveshaft always spins with hubs unlocked and not in 4x4. Is this how its supposed to be? Will it hurt it?

Hi.
If its spinning the same speed as the rear he needs to make sure the shifter is fully disengaged, If there was work done on it check to see if they put the sliding ring(sorry I dont know what its called) in backwards, Its easy to do and fix, Or like I said make sure the shifter is ALL the way forward and to the left, It wouldnt hurt to check out the linkage also.
Good luck

Another way to check, without hanging your head under the truck while you drive, is just grab the driveline and twist while it is parked. If it spins free with the vehicle in gear, you are good to go, if it won't spin, either the hubs are not unlocked, or you are in 4 wheel drive.

If the front driveline is spinning all the time, I would say it is not good with a stock cruiser case just because it is not normal.

I have seen the front output shaft pilot bearing fail and cause enough friction to spin the front shaft even with it disengaged...

Would it still spin if you twisted it with your hands, or would it be seized?

I could still spin it but it took alot more effort than normal...
