Once again guys, thanks for the help with my other transmission questions. I'm new to the board and my Toyota knowledge is novice at best, so the questions have probably been covered before. Thanks for you patience.

When reading through the transmission and clutch related threads it gets pretty confusing at to what fits what. I've got an '86 EFI 4Runner. Here's a few other questions that come to mind:

What other years will directly fit?

What other years can I use by changing T-case and/or bell housing?

Are there any half year changes I need to look out for?

Thanks again!

you're truck has a 4cyl right? i'm pretty sure that any 4cyl tranny will bolt up. the transfercase has nothing to do with if a tranny will bolt to an engine or not. all you need is a 4cyl tranny. keep the same tcase. just swap out the trannys. good luck

You should have a W56 tranny. If you must replace it I'd go with another W56 of the same style (there are 4). The real issue is the shifter locations. Some are top shift and some are forward shift. If you try to change styles of trannys you'll end up needing to cut new holes in your floor. In some rigs that is not an issue but in others it can turn into a headache because of the interior differences in the vehicles.

If you look at this chart it will answer your interchange questions. If you scroll farther down the page you'll see photos showing the different trannys. Notice the differences in the shifter locations...
