View Full Version : 5 speed tranny problems... ongoing... grrrr!

Well I think this 5 speed is finally toast in my '86 4Runner. :cuss: I found a replacement for it out of the same year. It has less miles on it than mine, but not by a long shot. Price seems ok ($350)
Question is... The guy at the shop who's going to install the replacement says the reason I'm having ongoing problems is because my tires are too big with stock gears. I don't know what the ratio is. However, the tires are only 30's, the truck is hardly ever off road, most miles are around town with local highways 65 mph and under. That seems like a load of crap after hearing of and seeing guys running 32 to 33's or bigger with lifts. Should I stick with the stock unit or is there an upgrade I can and should do?
Man, I love this ol' truck. The engine sounds like a little sewing machine, the heater's hot, the air blows cold, and it's comfortable to drive.
Any other transmission ideas or links to pages regarding the issue would sure be appreciated. :Help:

the guy is completly full of sh*t.. 30" tires is just about what came stock. is he telling you to regear the tranny? lol.. dont' worry about what he said he's a moron. btw.. is the 350 for the tranny installed? or is labor not included in the 350. if 350 is for the tranny installed i guess that's ok but otherwise i sugest you do it yourself.. it's rlly easy.

Yes, I totally agree with the above, your mechanic is either feeding you a line, or doesn't know jack. 30" tires..... ROFFL
Keep your eye on the board here under parts in the classifieds, I am willing to bet you could get a tranny for a little less. If your comfortable with tools, you could really do it your self and save a couple O bucks.
Good luck, but I say get a new mechanic.
350 HOLY COW

I know the tire size originally was something like a 225 or 235 and sitting them side by side it can't be much. That's what I thought too.
He was suggesting regearing the difs, which I'm not going to do on *this* truck because... well it just doesn't need it.
350 is for the tranny by itself, then he wanted another couple hundred to install it. It's a lot out of pocket, but my garage is cold as hell right now, and I don't have the right tools to do that job. So....

If it's an '85 carb motor, wouldn't I have to use my '86 bell housing and t-case? Mines '86 EFI.

i think it will bolt right up but i'm not sure. to swap out the trannys, all you need is a 12, 14 and 17mm ratchet and end wrench. a jack would help too lol.
i will find out the exact year and if u want to pay us to install it we will.
we could sell u the tranny and install it all for 300 bux. as long as u dont need a clutch.
300 bux?

That sure would be a better deal than what I'm seeing here. Problem is I'm in Missouri.
I thinking about attempting this swap myself. However I've never done a stick tranny and it's been 20 years since I've done any transmission work. (luckily!) So really it's a matter of finding out what fits, and then talking myself into it.
There's been so much bull**************** coming my way around hereabout this truck that I can't cypher what's right and what's not. I really appreciate you guys helping me sort through the crap to get to the bottom of things.
should of looked at ur name :) then i wouldnt have even offerd. but u could pay shipping for the tranny.
takes u about 1-2 hours to install.
place tranny on tranny jack or jacks of some sort.
remove the bell housing bolts and gear shifters.
removwe tranny mount bolts form rear crossmember.
drop tranny.
lift new tranny. slide shaft into the motor and put in 2-3 bolts. then put int he crossmember but dont tighten the 8 bolts just thread them in half way.
then tighten all bell housing bolts and then tighten the crossmember bolts.
put sticks back in and drive away.

Toyota's are easy to get the tranny's out of. Probably would be a good idea to go ahead and replace the clutch as long as you are in there. If it is the first time you have pulled a transmission would might be a good idea to find a friend who has done one before to come help. The most important part of the whole process is the "installation luberication", also known as beer.
