ok.. rebuilt the 22r and now when i try to start it, it just clicks. it has done this a few times before the rebuild but now unless it's being jumped, it just clicks. i've heard this can be caused by a bad relay or switch or something. i suck at wiring so i have no idea what to do. any ideas lol? thanks alot

check to make sure the engine is free.
could be the battery is not fully charged and if thats not it the starter contacts are probably worn and you will have to replace them.

Check your grounds man ,sounds like you forgot one ! I've bought a few needless starters and batteries only to find out it was a ground prob. Hope this helps

Many of the older toyota starters have this problem. One thing that temporarily fixed mine was taking the positive wire off the starter, cleaning it all up, and putting it back on, make sure its tight. If that doesn't work, replace the contacts on on it. Not very hard to do, especially if you have rebuilt your whole engine. Its like 4 bucks from the dealership for the rebuild kit.

hey, yea i fixed it on sunday. i went to the auto parts store and bought a starter relay and put it in. the way it's set up from the factory, the starter gets all of it's power through the starter switch. the starter switch can't handle the load and dies. now the only thing that the starter switch has to power is the relay. it works great. if you're having the same problem i can post a pic of exactly what i did.

When it starts doing the click thing again, you should get out and tap the starter with the handle of a hammer, or better yet have a friend do that while you're attempting to start it. If this helps things I would say definitely a starter, but sometimes it doesn't even help but can still be a starter...
In that case you can replace just the starter contacts which are like 6 bucks from toyota, but personally I would just replace the whole starter. Buy one from napa or somthing that has a lifetime warranty.

sry but i fixed this problem a long time ago. the facotry starting system doesn't use a relay. wired in a relay and it worked great.
