i recently put a new PS pump in my 94 P/U. i've done hi-steer (SAS) so its a pretty solid setup, ran good for a month or so but now after some mild wheeling and breaking a short side birf or inner axle (haven't taken it apart yet) it won't turn all the way to the left. and actually i broke that about a week ago, and it's just starting to do this so i wouldn't think that is the problem. i just sat in the driveway for about 1/2 an hour trying to bleed it, no air bubbles or fluctuating fluid levels. is there a way to bleed the steering box? is that the problem. also, now that i think about it my steering has been pretty weak. for the last couple of days i have had to rev up the engine every once in while to get my rig turning. help me out guys
all poop hi-steer, 94 PS system, 83 front axle, 94 P/U, 35" tires
no leaks, yes i am running ATF.

WTF ?? You broke your birf and you havent taken it apart yet ? And your still driving on it ??? Your birf is probably exploded and the birf chunks are in there preventing your wheel from turning all the way. :wow:
Yes there is a way to bleed your steering box. The bleeder screw faces the cab and is on the upper portion on your box.

okay, so do open it and turn the wheel back and forth or what?

Just loosen it up and start it up, let it run a bit. Do not take the screw out. Tighten it up and cycle it again.
Ive heard of most guys only have to bleed the system when they do a Hydro-Assist ( which was my case [plus i used a brake bleeder for mine] )
But good luck.

That's why it wont turn...tear it down and check the birf.If it broke and it's in piece's atleast clean it out and run without the axleshaft until you can replace it.

The Birf is obviously a problem, but I would also just check how tight your belt is. When my cruiser needs revved to turn, I tighten the belt and I am good to go.

change the birf. they need to be changed after they break unlike a dana 44 or a 60 u are lucky it hasnt caused you to crash and kill someone.

its not your steering box......lol if you have been driving with a broken birf you have other issues.

its not your steering. Little chunks are catching and causing it not let you turn. Go buy a new inner seal and pull out the broken birf. You can end up doing a lot of damage and also it can lock up the steering on you. Ive broken many birfs and that is what happens when one breaks.
There not bull****************ing its the birf.
This happened to me on one of my many failed birfs, I didnt have a spare so I was just tring top get back to camp but couldnt turn right only left. I pulled out the broken birf and she was fine again.
Get ready to use a die grinder in there its may be nasty, I had to use it to get the new seal in

Yup, it's a birf. I just took in a cruiser with the same prob... seen it before.

well i tore it all apart last week and never updated so... anyway both birfs are blown, one to pieces and the other just the star. no damage was done and i'm not running any shafts right now, but my steering is still weak, i have a decent setup (IMO) and i am getting more bump steer than expected at low speeds and it still sorta cuts out or something. i am gonna go try bleeding the box right now though.

Plan on doing knuckle bearings (or a whole rebuild) on the broken side. As you drive around with that broken birf, it grinds the inside of the housing and most likely has trashed your knuckle bearings too...

hey didn't you read my update? i tore it all apart and took out the broken stuff. trunions were all in good condition, i did't drive very much on it. so i still pose the question, were is the bleed screw for the steering box?

Looks like a brake bleeder.

WTF...it should bleed itself. I put a new box in mine when I did x-over and the whole system was empty. Just run the engine and turn the wheels back and forth. Are you positive nothing is messed up in your axle. try taking the arm off of the box and run the motor, see if its stil difficult to turn. Also there is a backlash setting its got a lock nut and a screwdriver slot right on top, back that off untill it starts leaking then tighten it up a bit. See if that fixes anything.
You live anywhere near ogden, or bountiful? I could help you out a bit. I live on campus at weber state and work in bountiful at menlove toyota!

Do you know how to tear your axle apart? Are you locked in the front?
You could start by trying to eliminate each side, lock only one hub and see which one is binding, but it sounds like you may have broken a birf!
