i have a 1987 toyota 4runner, 22re, 5spd manual trans., 3in body lift and 32 11.5" tires. i currently run about 17-18mpg for an avg. this seems like my mpg is low......anyone have an opinion?

I don't think that sounds too out of wack. Ecspecially if you are not re-geared. Has the rig been tuned lately? Probably wouldn't hurt to get the once over and make sure your plugs, filters are all good.

That is about right. The four cylinder inport trucks don't get the super mileage a lot of people think they do.

i concur, 17-18 mpg is not bad, especially with larger than stock tires. just be glad you dont have a V6, my last average was about 13-14 MPG with 31s. :puke:

I have 86 22re with 31" tires not lift. I only get about 12 mpg off road. Any reason this is so bad. I just got a new head gasket timing chain etc and tune up. Any thing else that might help a lot
I would love to get 18 mpg

its perfectly normal to get poor mileage off road, you are turning more parts (with 4wd engaged you have twice as much drivetrain to turn = twice as much frictional loss of power) and rough terrain generally requires more throttle to navigate than say, a nice smooth road. what do you get on highway? or is this truck strictly a wheeler? also if you have an auto tranny that will hurt you a bit as well.

My 4Runner is strictly off road but I drive it there. I guess I have never had a true highway test for my mpg. I was just expecting better mpg but off road makes sense to get much less. A lot of idling and high throttle

My '82 with 33's and 5.29 would get 17-18 on/off road, loaded for bear or empty.... 22r

My '86 22RE w/ 33's and 4.88's gets 18-20 mpg depending on how I drive. Used to get 20-24 w/ 32's. How are you calculating your mileage? Those 32's are probably throwing your odometer/trip meter readings off.

My 86 22re gets about 12 with 31s. Stupid auto tranny.

When my truck (85' EFI) had 32s with the stock 4.10s I'd get about 17-18 mpg highway/street and about 25 on long highway trips. With a new motor (a cam I'm thinking of replacing with the stocker  ), lift, 35s and 5.29s it's down to about 15-16 highway/street and 19 highway. And yes, I calculated for speedometer error ;) ........Hans

I could squeeeez 21 out of my '86 4 cyl, 5sp with 30's on the highway. But I drive it pretty easy. That, of course, was before the damn tranny went out. :cuss:
