I just got finished installing my High-Steer on my ’85. So as you know I had to replace my box which drained most of my power steering fluid. I refilled the fluid and jacked up the front wheels and turned the wheel back and forth several times with the engine off. Once again I filled up the reservoir turned the wheel, the level didn’t go down so I assumed that I had fluid thou out the system. I started the engine and it sounded like the pump was running dry, whining sound, am I doing something wrong? When I did a search this was the only method that I came up with. Is there a better way or should I just keep trying till the fluid works its way through? I just worried about F-ing up my pump by running it dry.
jack it up
turn ur truck on and turn the wheels back and forth while it whines.
turn it off refill and do it until it stops whining.

You may have some air in your system... Try bleeding your box.

I just bought a rebuilt pump for mine(85), the included directions say undo the pressure hose at the box and with the resevoir full crank the engine(make sure it does not start and the resevoir doesn't go dry). Refill resevoir and do again, this will prime/fill the pump...you can reconnect and do the tires off the ground method after this as well.
