I toasted my bearings in the bottom end of my 85 pickup 22re engine a few weeks ago, but have found a 83 celica with a 22re to replace the engine. I bought the whole car for $150.00, but what I need to know is if there is anything special I need to swap with the engine like part of the wireing harness, computer. I have tried to use a celica coil and ignitor on my truck before, and it wouldn't work, so I know there have to be some differences. If anyone has ever done this swap before, I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks Jon

I got a 78 celica with a 20R for free and put the motor in my 83 PU. It was carburated so I don't know about the EFI wiring and stuff. The problems I ran into though were that the Celica was not power steering. My power steering bolte up but one of the bolts didn't line up, not a big deal. I had to use my distributor because the Celica would not fit because the vacuum advance wouldn't clear the Power Steering. I used the oil pan from the Celica but it has some dents from my axle. It hasn't caused any problems though. If you use the pan from the truck make sure to change the pick up tube as well. The clutch on the Celica I got and the Truck were the same so I just used the one that was in the best condition. You may want to buy a new clutch while you are doing the swap however. I am using the carb from the Celica, the only wiring I had to do was plug in the electric choke and it plugged into the plug that was on the truck. I had to change the wiring plug on the distributor to make it work.

Basically the Celica's and the trucks are very similar, wasn't that hard to make it work. Of course I wasn't dealing with the fuel injection.

this is a simple fix, pull both motors, take the injection system and wireing off your old truck motor and put it on the celica motor Boom your done and ready to swap

Thanks guys, I don't think that the swap is going to be that hard, in fact other that the coil ignitor setup, the wireing harness seems to all plug up the same. I may end up switching all the injection stuff over, but only if I see some major difference that can't be fixed easily. I'm going to put a new chain and guides and clutch in the motor when it goes in. I bought all Auto Zone life waranty stuff last time I did this, so it's all free this time. Might as well do it while the engine is out. anyway, thanks for the help anything else would be appreciated.

do like 1985 toyota said and just swap the OG stuff from your old motor (intake manifold, harness) and put that on the new block. it is MUCH easyer than trying to swap all the other stuff. as far as the timing chain goes i have heard really bad things about auto zone stuff. personaly i have DOA metal guides (lifetime warrenty), toyota chain and gears. i think that w/ metal guides the chain stretches less and your timing is truer longer. i have also heard that it legenthens the time inbetween chainging them. thats my $.02

Thanks actually the timing chain was the only thing that wasn't a waranty item from auto zone. The clutch was a free one from auto zone, but I actually ordered a metal guide timing chain guide kit off ebay (only place i could find the metal guide kit) for the engine that is now blown, and i was thinking of just swaping it over to the new motor. It has no more than 300 miles, so there should be no wear on it yet. If there is a reason why this wont work I let me know, and I will but a new one.

Thanks Jon

Thanks Jon Well, for one thing, an 83' 22RE is an entirely different motor than an 85' 22RE. The 83' has a taller deck height than the 85' and thus uses a longer timing chain (I believe 2 links longer) so, it may also use different guides. Also, the heads are not interchangeable between the two........Hans

Thanks I had no idea there were that many differences, I'll order my new timing chain tommrow.
