So, I bought some '82 Toyota axles that have 4.88's and a Detroit Tru-trac in the rear. I want to swap the rear third member into the front axle so I can put a full locker in the rear, but I was told that the Tru-trac won't work in the front. Is there a difference between limited slip diffs for the front and rear?

I always thought you could put the third member from the rear in the front and vise versa.

I've always been told that a Tru-Trac meant for a rear application won't work too well in the front (and vice versa) because now it will be turning in the opposite direction it was designed for........Hans

I've always been told u have to break in a Truetrac, when i first got mine it didn't do a damn thing, but after awhile of using it, it really has become noticeable in its performance. Plus upfront you don't tend to get as much BBS, or broken birfield syndrome.

When I went to Tractech's website I found a list of applications for all of their lockers and limited slips that showed different part numbers for the Truetrac for the front and rear. That's why I wanted to post the question of whether a rear would work in the front. When I read the thread posted above on pirate4x4, someone apparently called Tractech and was told that the rear will still work in the front, but there would be a loss of performance (how much was not known). So, I'm thinking I might try it in the front for now because I would rather have a full locker in the rear.
