i am sick of worring about body damage on my yota. i would like to sell my bed and go truggy style, and eventually exo too. my question is, if i put some sort of axle mounted fenders that covered the required amount of tire, would it be legal? i would make the fenders quick disconnect, and i would probably have to make sure my bumber was legal. anyways what do you guys think:wow:

As long as you have some sort of fenders covering the tire you are legal. Also you need to have mud flaps, or fenders that go low enough. I know in Oregon the bottom of the fender or mudlap can't be higher than 27" from the ground. They actually raised that from 20" this year!

Up in the north here, as long as you have mudflaps your totally legal. So go to a library and do some read on traffic laws in your area or the local dunkin donuts talk with some cops and see what they have to say about keepin it legal. :read:

Becareful, Utah laws are like no others. You NEED to understand them carefully. The chances of you making a "street legal" truggy/buggy are slim here man, the troopers will get ya! :no no:

That's right, it is tough, but it is possible. It's just very difficult. You can get a copy of the inspection book online that you can print. You'll have to meet all of the requirements to a tee. I've been entertaining the same idea myself and am in the research portion of the project right now. The book even mentions making a "buggy" street legal. It also will need to pass smog in some counties. Down here in Washigton County we don't do smog so it's a little easier for us. Good luck and keep us posted.

Isnt Johnny a cop? Just have him inspect it for you, then when you fail, he can tell you what you need to fix to make it street legal. It's nice to have someone on our side who can actually understand and interpret the law.

First off, yes, I am. I'm a Robbery/Homicide Detective. Not a vehicle inspector:D Cops cannot inspect vehicles here, only licensed State Inspectors, or UHP has a unit that deals with this. Interpreting the law is a whole other challenge my friend, unfortunately one persons understandings may not be anothers. It sad, but true.
I would suggest getting a copy of the vehicle safety inspection guideline and going from there if you are serious about making a buggy. Once again though, set aside some of your modification money for Tylenol, because you will need it every year come time to get the thing inspected, or everytime you get stopped.
Personally, it's not worth it in my opinion. Either make it a trailer queen, or keep it street worthy the natural way.
