I went to Autozone to buy a new throwout bearing. They handed me a bearing and it looked like the right one, but it was missing the part to attach it to the clutch fork. Also shouldn't there be clips to hold the bearing to the fork? Mine doesn't have them but I thought Toyotas all had clips holding the bearing in place. Is a throwout bearing something I should get from the dealer or should I go somewhere else and see if they have the complete set?
The truck is an 83 if that makes a difference.

your old throwout bearing is pressed onto that little hub thing. use a vice 2 seperate the 2 then put the new bearing on with a piece of wood and a hammer. if you get the bearing from toyota, it comes with the hub attached. yes there are 2 clips holding the throwout bearing to the clutch fork. they keep the bearing on the clutch fork so when the clutch fork pulls back, the bearing goes back too instead of sitting and spinning on the clutch. get the clips from toyota or better yet, get some wire and wrap it around.. that will be alot stronger.

Thanks, I thought the bearing may have to be pressed on. I think I will just get the bearing from a parts store, press it on and use some wire to hold it to the fork.

I went to the stealership and asked how much a bearing would cost, $32! I thought ok that is the whole thing right? Oh no that is just the bearing we don't even carry the hub it goes on for a truck that old (83). I have a complete bearing at home that spins good, and feels good. The truck had a fairly new clutch and the bearing seems pretty new, it never made any noise so I am just going to reuse it. So I bought the two stupid clips, you weren't kidding they are STUPID! I am not sure they were even the right ones, I had to modify them to make them work. The truck never had them before, but I don't feel like doing this all again so I made them fit. They are CHEASY, but they should serve there purpose. The part I hate to admit is I paid $2.92 for them! I had to get a new clutch fork too, it was $32. :cuss: Oh well it will all be worth it to have it back on the trails.

do you know the part number for the stupid clips, i think i might replace mine since it's so easy to get to right now. 1 is kinda bent up. is that price for the both of them or each? thanks

That was the price for both. The part number appears to be:
31232-30010 - That is for the little wire style clips. One end was shaped like an 'L' and the other end was straight 'l'. I ended up making both ends 'L' shaped to make them work.
There is another number on here, I don't think it is a part number but here it is just in case: A10-15-G8.

i just replaced all my clutch componets when i took my motor out for a rebuild.... only took me 4 days. anyways. when i called about a clutch they said 100$ then a throwout bearing was 30 somthing. i thought damn. but when i went to pick it up, they informed me i got everything for 100. at napa autoparts. id recomend just changing everything while your down there. why not? i guess id rather fix it while im down there, its worth the extra couple bucks vs being down there twice. just my opinion.

It is mostly put back together now. I have to put the shifter boots, front driveshaft and the exhaust back on, but I drove it around my driveway a little and it works good. I had to show my buddy how to align the clutch without the alignment tool. Everytime I use the tool I end up fighting to get the tranny back in and if I just eyeball it the tranny will slide right in! It is nice to not hear the obnoxious squeal of the throwout bearing getting ready to seize any more!

no exaust :D how loud is it?

Freakin loud! Of course my redneck exhaust system consists of only a cherry bomb muffler anyways. I know a freakin' turbo muffler is only $20 bucks. Running with just a piece of pipe from the manifold though it is LOUD! If you tried to drive very far you would have a serious headache.

I feel your pain. My system failed ahead of the cat when I was up near Lansing climbing. Had to drive 2 hours home with nothing but the downpipe. It took a full day for the ringing to stop.

We lost the cat once on my buddy's Samurai and drove home with just the downpipe, I had no idea that a 1.3 liter could make so much noise! We put pieces of a napkin in our ears as ear plugs, didn't help much!
