Ok, so I went to adjust the idle screw on my 86 22re.
it was already all the way down.

and the truck still idles at around 1200rpm.

is there anything else I can adjust?

thanx

get a throttle positioning censor. that should do the trick

It might be the idle air valve (right below the throttle body with a hose coming off it to the bottom of the throttle body). Upon start up the air valve allows air to bypass the throttle plate, sending it into a high idle (about 1200 rpm;) ) after it warms up, it closes off that passage and then, the idle air screw (the one you turned all the way in) determines the idle speed. Try pinching that hose off and see if the idle speed drops substantially, if it does, you found the culprit. I've also had problems with the TPS (throttle position sensor) sticking and not fully going back to the idle position, just take it off (mark it's position so you won't have to readjust it) and clean the inside (where the unit engages the throttle shaft) with some contact spray (NOT CARB CLEANER!). You might want to get a hold of a repair manual (sometimes you can get infromation from your public library or try here: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml ) Hope that helps...........Hans

Are your valve clearances correctly adjusted?

Check the Dashpot. is it set to high and not letting the throttle come down farther.

any good vacuum leaks?

other than the higher than norma idle, the truck is running good. im not exactly sure of what is what on this engine. (its my first toyota).

Ill have to pick up a repair manual and start going through that.

Thanks for the help!
