View Full Version : 2inches of spacing too much? (wheels)

I'm looking to space my 15x8 in rims out, figuring 2 inches would be right using the bolt on aluminum wheel spacers that are out there. A guy who does this says not to go over 1.75 inches. Why would this be?

Thoughts or experiences?

im not familiar with wheel spacers myself, buy basic physics says that the longer the lever, the greater the force that is applied. = the further out you space your wheels, the more force you will be applying to the mounting surface and in turn the hub, wheel bearings, etc. This could cause parts to wear prematurely or fail, in theory. Like i said before, i dont have personal experience with this issue.

I have some jeep friends with a YJ and a CJ. They do not recommend wheelspacers. They prone to do exactly what illiand said...premature failure or breakage/crackage. If you want that extra width just get some wheels with a 2"-3" backspacing. That should do the trick.:bye:

A.O.R has steel spacers that would be tougher.

the issue is where the centerline of the tire is, if you imagine that the center of the tire represents a half way point for the leverage. moving the center of the tire out w/ wheels or spacers will feel the same to the wheel bearings. but getting 8" wide wheels w/ 2" bs and a 2" spacer will be alot worse than one or the other.

another thing to consider is that as you move the center of the tire out you DON'T move the steering axis so the tire is pivoting way out from the axis. picture the tire pivots here x-) but makes an arc that follows the )

in the end i decided on spacers, 1.5" from marlin and i will use 10" wheels w/ a commomnly available 3.75" backspace.
