rear #?

i got this truck its a 85 4x4 long bed the guy i got it from said he belives it has 4.56s is the any way i could find this out? like a serial number on the rear?

4.56 was not an option in 85 so the vin tag won't tell you. but there is a tag under the hood at the top of the bulkhead that has a code for rear axle. i don't recall the codes off the top of my head.

you can try to turn the driveshaft and wheel and count carefully but it is hard to tell the difference between 4.30 and 4.56, for example. but if it is a 4.56 then one rotation of the tire should produce 4.56 rotations of the driveshaft.

last is to pull the dif which is not that hard.

pull your drive shaft off and there should be some paint on the bolt underneath. I don't remember all of the colors, but I know pink is 4.10's. I believe this only works if they are toyota gears. The other colors are on the web If you do a search, or maybe someone else knows

yellow is 4.56:1
white is 4.88:1
pink is 4.10:1
green is 4.375:1
