OK< so the vibe I get is that an auto tranny is not so groovy...say for the sake of argument I decide to swap in a W56 and a transfer case...anybody done this before? What's gonna come up and bite me on the butt?
Maybe I shoud just get this one running, (gotta blown head gasket, no biggie) sell it, and use the $$ to do an SAS on my '87.
Opinions?
TIA

How do you know?
The biggest grief I'm having with doing the SAS is finding a stinking axle. Hard to find in Central Texas.

Damn that must suck. I only have one truck and I have three toyota front axle housings. 1 complete hub 2 hub.

I just did a tranny swap on my 85 4runner it went very well and only took about 6hrs and cost about $600.00(can) where a SAS the hy-steer alone is worth over $700.00(can)

Did you have to replace the ECM? What about wiring harness mods? Is there a web site with info on the little details?

The tranny has it's own ECM so the only wiring you have to do is the NSS and reverse light the parts needed are tranny, the clutch master and slave cylinder and clutch pedel and rear drive shaft. I ended up using the front drive shaft from the auto which is 3" longer so it worked with my lift. The cross member are the same but the rubber mount need to be changed. after you find all the parts The only other things you needs to do is cut the shifter hole about 2" wider I used the shift boot cover plate as a tin plate then you need to drill 3 hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder to mount into and again I used the pedel mounts as a guide for drilling those.
This has been by far the best mod. done to my 4runner a another thing to keep in mind is that the auto have 4.37 gears in the axles so if you run larger tires it will help a bit. I will be doing a tec article on the swap soon and you will be able to check it out on WWW.TOONTOYS.CA
