Picked up an 85 4runner for a song today. Got a blown head gasket but that's no big deal to me, I've fixed 'em before. What I need to know is:
It has an auto tranny. Is this good or bad? Never had a toy with an auto before.
Planning on 35's. How much lift? The 87 I have is not lifted, so I hafta ask.
What ratio in the pumpkins for 35's?
Who has the best deal, price/quality, on crossover steering arms?
I'm sure more questions will come.
Tanks a mil

1) auto isn't bad, but if it blows, put in a w56
2)you'll need about 5" of lift to clear 35's
3) 5.29 gears
4) go with all pro steering
If the auto is in good shape then you may have a blessing. Gearing options are kinda limited.....can only change the ring and pinion. My choice would be 571 US GEARS with those 35" tires. Worried about "straining" them low gears? ha ha it's a 4 cylinder....with liquid coupling. Autos let everything live longer....axle splines and birfs too.
Just look at my rigs in the sig.

well i wouldnt recomend the 571's because they break easily. and i would go with www.marlincrawler.com for steering or anything else. better customer service and prices for toyotas

the lift depends oh what you use. i have 3 inches lift and 37s with no fender cutting. uding out of the box lift springs then 5 icnehs is what u need.

I'm hip to swapping out the tranny....would I need to change the ECM if I did that? I would think that the computers would be different.

Didn't you read the post directly before yours?
Zuk's correct.
With a 4 cyl coupled to an auto tranny, 5.71 gears are a safe bet, and also would be a better choice than 5.29s because of the auto tranny. Diffs on auto equipped vehicles are typically geared lower than their manual equipped version due to the inherent losses thru the auto tranny.

What ever Gear set you go with send them to Bobby long and have the treated before you put them in. Then you will have no worries about your R&P!!

I say screw the 5.29's go over to www.lcengineering.com and get the stroker 22re kit and slap the new efi supercharger on there with a cold air intake headers and a complete new exhaust with hi flo cat. Then geering wouldn't be a problem. HA HA HA HA HA MORE POWER. With all that extra power you would have to go to bobby longfield and get the new super birfields. :Rockonman

Mmmmmm, supercharger........
5.29's for sure. I'm not a big fan of the auto tranny, ecspecially if you want to crawl (adding a Marlin is was not possible in the past, it may be now thought, still a difficult one though). If you can swap with a manual, I would.
All Pro or Marlin has a grundle of great products for your rig. Good luck.

well if u feel like paying $2700 to only gain 65 hp. go for it! then since u have no gearing on the trail u have to wrap your truck to get it places. my expeirence tells me thats when parts break. but thats just me!
