Well, it is time to fix my leaking axles..AGAIN! I have done this job before and I am not looking forward to doing it again. I am only doing this because my rotors are covered in oil/grease.
However I was thinking back to the last time I did this and maybe my problem was I did not have the proper tools. From looking in the factory manuel there is several speciality tools used SST.
So my question is: is there any Utah members that have these tools? One being the knuckle cup bearing puller sst 09606-60020? And if so would you rent it out? Or since this is a Toyota group maybe we would could start a toy tool box. These tools are expensive but if we all pitched in, it would not be bad and we only need them occationally anyway. What do you guys think?
I am open to other ideas and tricks to save some me from greasy frustration.

You dont need to get the factory tools...
Here is what i use..
Hub Socket... Purchased from CruiserOutfitters ($16.50)
http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/hubsocket.html
C-Clip Plyers.
Purchased from
http://www.harborfreight.com/
Seal -Puller
From Auto Zone
And then your normal
10/12/14 and whatever sockets that thing takes to pull it apart.
The Specialty Tools were pretty cheap too.
As far as bearing puller ? Ive never replaced the wheel bearings, but i have replaced plenty of birfs and plenty of seals..

I personally have rebuilt them also without the proper tools several times, I have about given up on them. I think them the knuckle pits with rust it has a little rougher texture to it and that wears at the wiper seal, I tried to smooth it up a little but I think that speeds up the time it takes to leak

Thanks, I do have the hub socket.
Is it possible to change the inner axle oil seal without taking the knuckle part off? If I remember right, it seem like it was tough to pull the tie rod off the steering knunkle and take the upper and lower knuckle bearings out. Since those bearing are only 3 years old that part may not needed. Just curious, how long did it take you guys to do the job?
I will go buy the clip pliers and seal puller for sure.

If i remember correctly you dont have to take the actual knuckle off just to replace the seal. You should be able to reach the seal with the knuckle still on there..
When i do it, usually buy complete rebuild kits and do all the bearings and seals anyway, while im in there.

Takes me a couple hours to do it all. But then again im slow.
Ive heard of people doing it in 20mins on the trail, but on the trail it takes me about the same amount of time, no matter what way i do it.

The easiest way to replace the inner seal is to pull the hub cap off then remove the clip on the end of the birf. remove the wiper and pop the top steering arm off. The whole knuckle will come off. You don't even have to take the brake caliper off. I've changed birfs in 20 min this way.
