I have an 85 Toyota with a 22r in it. If I bought a different truck with a 22re in it, would it be possible to take the 22r and put it in the new truck. My 22r has very low miles on it but the rest of the truck is shot. Is it possible to take a 22r and make it a 22re? Would it be an easy switch or would it be a pain in the ass?

It depends on what year your 22r is. If yours is a true 85' it should already have the stud and bolt holes for an EFI intake. I believe that 83' and 84' had a spot where you could drill these holes because the Celica's started getting EFI in 83'. Before that I'm not sure if 22r's in 81' and 82' had the spots to drill and tap the holes, but they could have. I'd look at the bolt pattern for an EFI intake and see if you do have the holes. Also, your truck probably does not have an EFI fuel tank, which you would also need to change to make it a 22re.

i think its doable....the only diff is the 22re is feul injected and your 22r is a carb motor. my buddy has a 22r motor and is currently putting in a feul injection swap (keeping the 22r block)
there are a few other things he had to change which i dunno if you'll have to..like the feul tank and junk...but...it is possible.

thanks for the info
dood any 22r is ready for efi. my buddy is building his engine as we speak and he bought a 22r block and everything bolts right up to his old 22re stuff. the carb mount and the efi mounts the same.
items u will need for a efi conversion.
since u got both trucks ull be fine.
list: efi assembly, computer system on pasanger side kick pane, gas tank with the fuel pump inside.
i think that is it.
u need the tank cuz on 22r's fuel pump is on block and it does not push enough pressure for efi so make sure u keep the tank and replace the fuel pump and filter and it will run like a champ
22r and 22re blocks are identical

EFI Head (unless your 85' 22R has the extra studs needed for the EFI intake), Intake & Injectors, Harness & Computer, MAF sensor, Valve Cover, Exhaust Manifold, EFI gas tannk, fuel pump.
So, at best, your head has the provisions to bolt everything on... worst case, you have to swap heads...
he said it and he knows engines way better than me so cant be that tough.
i know its the same block

A couple more things...
Oxygen sensor may or may not be different on the carb vs. EFI
Also, be careful if you do have to swap heads... a strong bottom end and a weak head (high milage head) can lead to disaster, just as a rebuilt head and a loose bottom end... best to try and stick with your head (machine the boss's for studs if possible) or rebuild the head to match your fresh block...
Just my .02 cents... :D

One last thing... PM Tracy (1/4eliptic) if your serious about the swap, he did the same EFI swap on his wifes 4Runner... and I have seen how good it runs... ;)

22re's had different blocks, earlier ones maybe were the same as 22r's. Lol, to prove this, when I first built my 22re, i only had my 22r dipstick tube, i knew the dipsticks were identical, but the it took 7 quarts to get my dipstick to read Full. If you were to run an early 22r with a 22re head, the pistons would hit the vales and etc.
P.S. My EFI swap in my 81' will be done tonite, finally.
