OK for all you 22R geniuses i've got a problem. My tuck is sputtering really bad, and by sputtering I mean it cuts out at a very high frequency. it almost sounds like a 2 stroke how it makes that high pitch tingy noise. The problem occurs the worst when there is little or no load on the engine, like when driving down the highway at any speed. It constantly cuts in and out. It also does it when i just hold the engine at a constant rpm with no load at all. The rpm will bounce up and down several hundred RPM. THe only time it seems not to do this is when the secondary barrel in the carb is in use, i.e. full throttle. as soon as I step it down it rockets away like nothings wrong.

I am not sure whether its ignition or fuel related, i am leaning toward fuel, but this is what i have done to try and remedy it so far.

This is a almost new engine with barely 3k on it.
just rebuilt carb this weekend and cleaned thouroghly.
new vacuum lines and rechecked for proper routing.
the plugs were new with engine
the fuel filter was new with engine

Any help would be gratefully appreciated and ideas on how to actually check things would be the best, I don't really have funds to just through parts at it till its fixed. It is really about to drive me crazy, I don't like it when new things don't work. By the way, it only did this when it was cold when i first put in the engine and then almost over night it got really bad, help please.

its ur timeing. my friend has same problem with new engine. ur distributer is not top dead center to ur main pully or crank or whatever.

hard to explain cuz im not a genius but its in the manual he has and it says u calculate it to 5 degrees before the 1st spark plug and then when it hits the spark its at zero or top dead center.

im sure someone else could help u out more but its ur timeing with the distributor cap. get a hold of a authentic toyota service manual and it tells u exactly what im saying with more detail and pictures and shows u how to do it

well I kinda feel really stupid now. I just ran out there and just turned back the timing a bit just by feel and the missing is now gone. went a little far the first time and just about neutered the truck. advanced it a little back and is better, still not quite the full power I had at full throttle before but I would rather have a smooth drive all the time.

The thing that confueses me is that it was fine before so how the heck did it change? cam gear wear in finally or something??? oh well, I'll get out the book and set the timing for real soon and see how she feels then. Thanks for the friendly reminder.... DOH!!
