u dont get around the air sensor. i bought mine off ebay for $20 w/shipping, it has a rice filter on it. all it is, is an adapter to the mafs, then bolt the filter. u just need to make some brackets so its not flopping there, no big deal.

diddo, buy the air filter k&n whatever, you can get the big ones for 50 bucks tops at the local auto shop. (without the connectors that come with the $300 kit. I did the rest with sprinkler parts myself.
I swapped places with my battery while I was at it to get it away from the hot exhaust.
I think it gave me more power than adding a lc eng. header and 2 1/4" exhaust all the way back. you should enjoy this one!

Just curious, has anyone done and dyno or other tests to confirm wether or not a aftermarket intake is REALLY beneficial?
The problem I see with just placing an air filter, be it a K&N or other brand(see below on other brands), in the engine compartment is that it is breathing warm air. An engine that breaths warm air results in less air. The objective is cold air, and more air. The stock box is ported through the front (kinda) to get this air. So all in all, I am wondering how restrictive the OEM Toy box is.
The reason I bring this up is because I have been doing some research on an intake with my BMW. Dyno results suggest the car has less HP with a aftermarket cold air intake. The stock box is pretty much the way to go.
Another food for thought is this. There has been much talk about wether or not an aftermarket "oiled type" filter is safe for your sensors and so forth. K&N claims that due to their strong adhesive quality on their filters, the oil remains. Other cheap filters may not hold the oil as well which could result in sensor damage or failure.
just food for thought.
p.s., loud intake noise does not actually mean more HP.

I don't care much to dyno a 112 hp engine(from the factory) yes it would prove your point, but the 2-3 mpg increase and my confidence in knowing how my rig drives is enough for me. I also compared it against the increase I felt in doing my exhaust. That is proven to increase the power. On a 4runner I'd bet a dollar it's a decent increase

I had been thinking about getting some tube and putting my filter where the battery goes and move the battery over to where the air filter went, right now i dont have the cash to move the battery to the back, so ill just move it over for now, ne ideas on that one? i had heard that about warm air, and thought i might as well try it and maybe it will clean up my engine compartment a lil bit:Rockonman
