So i went to wash my new (to me) 'runner for the first time about 30 mins ago and come to find out that my windshield leaks. Drivers side, behind the sun visor, kinda towards the middle of the truck.
Funny thing is my buddy's '86 4runner leaks in exactly the same spot.
Just a wierd coincidence, or have any of you guys had the same problem?
I was thinking I'll probably just pull off all the chrome trim pieces, go to town with some silicon caulk, and then stick the trim back on. Anybody got any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Vince

You may break the glass trying to take it off. The moulding is held down with some black clips that attach to the back side of the moulding. Then they are pressed in to the glue and sometime they get really close to the edge of the glass. If you do get the moulding off then you may have a hard time trying to get it to lay flat.
Dont use silicon. It attracks water and water will make rust. Take the inner moulding off along the top side of the w/s. It is that strip that is right behind the Rearview mirror. If you do fix it your self get Urathane at the parts store and try it that way.
Most glass shops will fix this for you for $30.00
I used a diffent moudling on my W/S. Check it out.

Just uncsrew the grill where the wipers are. move it back a few inches and caulk the wind shield. You may need to remove the wiper arms if you can't pull it back far enough.
Its also a good time to check if the firewall has rusted trough...
And a question for Big Daddy, Silicone attracts water??????

I'm in SoCal at the moment, so I wont have to worry too much about water getting in unless I put it there. As far as not washing it, I'm still in the "I got a new toy" stage, so I'm gonna have a hard time resisting the urge to keep it shiny!
I probably will end up taking it to a glass shop if its only gonna be like $30; I figured it would be way more than that.
There is hardly any rust on the truck at all, just one or two very small surface spots; and the leak is at the top of the windshield, so im pretty sure that its not a hole in the firewall.
Everybody out here looks at me wierd when I get all excited about having a rust-free vehicle; They should go up to Michigan and see what its like up there!
Mostly I was just curious if this was a common problem on 4runners or just some wierd coincidence.
Thanks again,
Vince

Why do you want him to take the wipers off? THe Glass in leaking on the top.
Yes if you use silicone any were around a pinch weld it will attract water. It will still bead off, but water will stay with it and tear up the pinch weld. Go try it. Take off your Cowl and spread some down there. Come back in a year and see what happens.
W/S use to be held in with Rubber gaskets (silicone use to be used in those), then Ralph Nater stuck his hands into the automotive industry and wanted safety for the people and came up with using Urethane to hold the glass in to place. In the early 80 the shit was so hard it was like a brick. Now Windshields are giving some of the cars and trucks the support for the roofs, if you look you will find that the A pillars are under the glass on Chevy's and some Dodges. IF you look at the toy above the A pillar is exposed.

The sunroof is probably just bad weather stripping, shouldnt be to hard to find and change out.
As far as the window, i havent gotten anywhere with mine as it never (almost anyway) rains in California, so its not real high on my list of priorities. Ill let you know what i end up doing, though.
mine leaked and i went all around it with silicone....no more leaky:)
