From my understanding the differences are, sprung weight is any weight that is supported above the springs (i.e Frame, body, motor etc. possibly even part of the upper springs ). Unsprung weight is any weight that is below the springs ( i.e Axles, Tires, brakes etc ). What i dont understand is when i hear some people like more sprung weight compared to unsprung weight ( in wheeling ).. Now depending on your Hobby/recreational vehicle... For example in Motocross you would rather have less unsprung weight wich makes your suspension work better, and your handling a lot more precise. I would imagine would be the same in baja trucks and race cars. In rockcrawling, i would think you would want less sprung weight and more unsprung weight, to keep your center of gravity lower, and to also help keep your tires on the ground. Why would someone want more sprung weight in wheeling ? Maybe there is a difference in suspension types Leaf springs, Coils, Coilovers that would want more sprung weight vs unsprung weight?

Unsprung weight is the key in newer competition buggies... some have gone as far as to mount the battery ("Tiny") to the front axle, as well as the winch (Rockware's) new buggy... its all about the LCG...
