Just registered and did a couple searches RE: newbies - did not see any flames so assume it is safe to enter.
Short version - I have been into 4wheeling a long time and have owned a lot of rigs. I currently have an SJ410 ( primitive ancestor of suzuki samurai). It goes wherever I point it but is getting a little long in the tooth as they say. Also with 2 kids and my job it is way to small. I am sick of trying to haul lumber home in my wife's volvo.
I have owned a 76 corolla and a geo prizm but never a toy truck. I attempted to buy new ones about 3 times but the dealers in Arizona are criminals. I am putting my zuk up for sale and looking for a toy truck. I was hoping for a straight axle but they are getting rare down here so it will probably be a flapper front end with 4cyl/ 5 speed. Looking to probably run radial mud tires (33"), rear aussie locker, and soon a marlin 4.7 set. If my winch gets sold with the zuk I will need another one and to fab up a bumper for it.
I have only worked on a couple toys ever- I did a head gasket / timing chain for a friend and a rebuild for another guy many years ago ( both 22re). Other than that I am totally new to the nyota scene. :Nerd:
there the best u will nvr regret getting into ur toy. perfect truck in my opinion: 85 toy ext cab with the 22re. but since u got family maybe a 4runner 85 with the 22re would be better.
in utah theres quite a few of yotas if u dont mine paying a bit and getting rust with ur purchase

Heck, you've dived deeper into the Yotas than half the Yota guys on the board. :D I tend to agree with Atilla in that the Runner is the rig of choice for a family. The rear split seat is nice....folds down and ya have a pick-up bed to transport things. Don't under-estimate the wheelin capabilities of an IFS 86-89 version......also, in 1990 they went solid top and can't remove it. Makes a good stationwagon.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, go with a 84-89 4runner. I just bought one three weeks ago after driving a reg cab toyota pickup for a couple years and couldn't be happier; except maybe if it had come with an SAS and lockers and 35s and....

thanks for the info! I do like those older4runners but I would want to have the top off 90% of the time and would have yet another thing to store at JPs house ( I manage 2 apt. complexes and live on site) . Basically all my tools and stuff is stored in 3 different places. I was thinking of an xtra cab truck for the utility bed and xtra seats for short trips.
It will have to stay streetable , capable of freeway speeds. I want to go to that off road park in Alabama and someday make it back out to Moab and see my friends in Farmington.
My brother in law can fly me out one way if I buy one far from here on ebay or something.

If you want a 4 Runner, I know in Colorado Springs you can pick up a few. 84-85 EFIs My buddy has one needs a timing chain (he has it just needs to be installed) I think he is asking $2500. If you gave him $2000 I am sure he would jump on it.
I have a Runner with no back seat. Most of the guys that have familys tend to go with Runners with the back seat for the kids. I also ditched the rear seats years ago and put one of those shelfs in there. It makes it a truck almost. Your tools would be safe. Then if you wanted to take a road trip you put the seat back in:Thumbsup: Also the top comes off...so you can get really crazy!!

Welcome to the board. I had an 84 extra cab, they didn't have much room till 89. I love my runner, fits 4 nicely. You're on the right track, stick with the 5 speed, the auto becomes a limiting factor in a buildup. No Marlin Crawler till I swap it for a R151.

yeah welcome to the board, you wont regret gettin a yota, and an 85 with efi is the one to have in my opinion, score for you
Yeah, welcome to the board. I'm not quite sure where you are, but here in SC, a buddy has a 85, blown motor, 35' w' gears good paint, and well taken care of except the motor, wants like 2500 but I'm sure you could talk him don, the only reason he didn't rebuild it was his family gets in the way of his wheeling.
