i have a dana 44 front on my yota and im curious after i get the axle off this weekend, where will i take it to get the knuckles cut and turned so that my angle will stop breaking my front driveshaft.

if anyone has advice on a better solution besides a shim please let me know.

as of now im going to get them turned and then redo my spring perches on my axle.

i have a shim as it is and it doesnt do that job right.

also does anyone know how hard it is to get ur front reversed cut and what gear set u buy???

help on both subject appreciated

Charles at Rocky Mountain Axle does it (he used to work for Advanced 4WD)... I'm not on my computer so I don't have his phone # handy.

Advanced 4wd in SLC also does it, Mepco probably does too (Actually Tera)

As far as reverse cut, it requires a completly different axle, one thatg was hi-pinion (this requiring reverse cut gears) from Dana, Ford Trucks and Broncos (not 100% sure on years) came with this front axle, however it will most likely be a 5 lug, requiring custom work to match it to your 8 lug rears. Or you could swap the Ford 9" rear axle off of the same donor truck 78',79.80'ish 3/4 Ton trucks...

no custom work to make a ford axle 8 lug just use your chevy knuckles. and bolt them on. as far as cuttin and turning the axle its pretty easy if you have a grinder and a welder. just grind the welds and hammmer the knuckles to where you want them. then weld them back in place.

EDIT: what u joints are you using and do u have dual cases. my angle sucked bad with my dana 44 but i was using toy u joints with a toy/dana 44 flange from high angle d line and never had a problem dual cases helped a lot of the angle

thnx guys

drew u dont think i need to take my axle to a machine shop to have it done?

cuz my friend would weld it but im not sure we have the equipment to handle that sorta deal.

they are 77 3/4 suburban axles just so u know what im dealing with

no its pretty easy just take degree measurements so you can put them back to the same. should take like 2-3 hours.

To have it cut on a lathe (straight and true) as well as re-welded on a jog (angles, both caster and camber)... it will probably cost you $100.

All you take is your stripped housing and the angles you would like it to be.

Can you do it yourself? Sure, but I have have a couple re-do's come to me after customers thought they could do it themselves... I have done at least 25 Toyota housings in the last year without a hitch... but the Dana stuff requires a different jig (not enough interest to warrant me building one)

Call Charles @ Rocky Mountain, just the call is worth talking to a guy of his knowledge (started doin 4x stuff in the early 70's)
